Sea Gulls Blank Spartans in CAC Opener Friday Night

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad had a first on Friday night in York. The Spartans dropped their second straight match as they fell to Salisbury University 3-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads. It is the first time in 20 matches this year that the Spartans have suffered losses in consecutive outings.

 

Match #20:

Salisbury def. York 25-18, 25-23, 27-25

Records: York 16-4 (0-1 CAC), Salisbury 12-5 (1-0 CAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Sea Gulls took control of the match during the first set. The Sea Gulls sprinted out to a 10-6 lead and eventually pushed out to a 19-12 edge. York trimmed their deficit to six three different times but could get no closer as the Gulls posted the seven-point first set win.  

• Set two was far more competitive as the set featured 11 ties and four lead changes. Neither team held more than a three-point lead. The Spartans held a 12-11 lead but Salisbury went on a 5-1 run to take a 16-13 lead. Salisbury maintained the lead until York tied the set at 19. The set would be tied again at 20 and for the final time at 21. The Sea Gulls pushed out to a 23-21 lead but a Spartan timeout followed by a Brooke Krebs kill cut the Salisbury lead to one. Salisbury scored the next point but a service error kept the Green and White alive. York committed an attack error to give the Gulls a 25-23 set two win.

• The third set was almost identical to the second as the set went back and forth. The Spartans pushed out to an early 9-6 lead but the Gulls scored three straight to knot the set at nine. The set was tied again at 14 but Salisbury went on a 6-2 run to take a four-point advantage. Salisbury held a 22-18 lead but York fashioned a 6-1 spurt to take a 24-23 lead. The last two points of the run came on a pair of Kelly Cavey kills. Salisbury scored the next two points to seize the 25-24 lead. York tied the set again at 25 but the Gulls captured the three-set match win with two consecutive points to earn the 27-25 victory.

Friday's Notes:

The Spartans have dropped three of their last five matches after starting the season with a 14-1 mark … the three set loss was the first straight set loss of the season for the Spartans … the other three Spartan losses all came in four sets.

 

What's Next:

The Spartans conclude their season-high seven match home stand with a Saturday afternoon match against Wesley College. The Capital Athletic Conference match up is set for a 2:00 pm start in York.
