McDaniel Volleyball Continues Mastery of Spartans

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad suffered a 3-1 loss to McDaniel College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night in York.  

 

Match #19:

McDaniel def. York 25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 25-14

Records: York 16-3, McDaniel 8-9

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The opening set was typically tight early as there were three ties early on. York pushed out to a five-point lead at 11-6. The Green Terror scored six of the next seven points to forge a 12-12 tie. The Green Terror continued the run by scoring four straight to take a 16-12 lead. York battled back to tie the set at 16 with a four point run of their own. The set would be tied six more times with the last time coming at 22. The Green Terror would score three of the final four points of the set to capture the 25-23 win.

• Set two would be extremely close. There were 11 ties with neither team holding more than a two-point lead as the teams were tied at 17. The Green Terror hit York with a quick 3-0 spurt to take a 20-17 lead. McDaniel would push out to a 23-20 lead before York scored two points to draw to within one. The Green Terror would score the final two points to seize a commanding 2-0 overall match lead.

• McDaniel would take control of the third set early as the Green Terror pushed out to a 15-8 lead. York put together a 13-6 run to tie the set at 21. The set was tied at 22, 23, and 24 before the Spartans tallied the final two points of the set to force a fourth game.

• The third set comeback seemed to sap the energy from the Spartans as the Green Terror steamrolled York in the fourth set. McDaniel jumped out to a 14-6 lead and York would not get any closer than five points the rest of the way. The Green Terror pushed their game four lead to 12 multiple times before closing out the match with a 25-14 win.

Wednesday's Notes:

The Spartans have dropped two of their last four matches after winning 14 of their first 15 matches … McDaniel has won four in a row in the series with York's last win coming on September 4, 2013 at McDaniel … all three of York's losses have come in four sets … York has hit .191 (Hiram), .099 (Marietta), and .145 (McDaniel) in their three losses this year … York committed 12 service errors in the match and that is the tenth time this year the Spartans have reached double figures in that category … York has just two non-conference games remaining in the year as they travel to Elizabethtown (Oct. 11) and host Goucher (Oct. 19).

 

What's Next:

The Spartans continue their season-high seven match home stand on Friday night when they host Salisbury University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start. York will then conclude their home stand with a Saturday afternoon match against Wesley. That match is slated for a 2:00 pm start.
