YORK, PA  – The York College volleyball squad made their 2016 debut a memorable one as they outlasted Gettysburg College 3-2 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday in York.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Gettysburg took it to Spartans out of the gates as they jumped out to a six-point lead at 13-7. York eventually tied the match at 15 courtesy of an 8-2 run. The Bullets wouldn't be able to put away the Spartans as neither team held a lead of more than three the rest of the way as the Bullets held off the hungry Spartans 28-26 in the first set.

• Gettysburg flew out to a great start in game two as they made it look like they were going to blow the Spartans out of the water. The Bullets led 16-5 and again 18-7 before the Spartans making a run. York went on a 12-1 to tie the set at 19. York scored 6 of the next nine points of the game to tie the match at one set each.

• The third set proved to be the closest of all the sets. The game featured nine ties with the last one coming at 13-13. The Bullets then hit the Spartans with a three run game and York would not trail again in the set. The Bullets pushed the lead to 23-17  before settling for the 25-20 final in the third set.

• York was far more assertive in the second half. The Spartans trailed early before tying the game at eight. York would built the lead to eight at 22-14. York would score three of the next four points to provide York with a cushion.

• The fifth set saw the Bullets get off to a 4-2, but they quickly trailed 6-5. York pushed the lead to 8-5 before the teams switched sides. York increased to the lead to 14-10. The two teams traded points as the Green and White closed out the match.

The Spartans improve to 9-1, their best start since 2010 when the Spartans started the campaign with a mark of 22-1 en route to an overall record of 27-6 … The win was the first five set win of the year as York is now 1-0 when going to five sets … York has won just one four set match (Sept. 2 vs. Oberline, 2-0) … Wednesday's 52 kills were the second highest total time just missing out being the top slot (53 at Hiram … York registered 18 block assists in the win while they also had four … the Spartans have won seven in a row … York has now won five straight against Gettysburg.

The Spartans make their long awaited home debut against Gettysburg College on Wednesday night in Wolf Gymnasium. The match will be the Spartans' first home game after opening the season with 10 matches on the road. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
