Spartans Stumble on Road Trip to Wesley

Box Score

DOVER, Del. – The York College men's basketball team suffered a 69-60 defeat to Wesley College on the road on Wednesday night in a Capital Athletic Conference contest.

The Spartans (9-11, 5-8 CAC) played the type of game that they wanted to play in that they kept the score relatively low and did not allow Wesley (7-13, 5-8) to get out and run the floor. Unfortunately, York struggled to string together enough scoring possessions throughout the contest to apply any serious pressure on the Wolverines who took the lead eight minutes into the game and held it for remainder of the contest, minus one possession in the second half.

York fell behind by eight in the first half, but rallied back to pull within three points heading into the locker room at halftime. The Spartans out-scored the Wolverines 8-6 in the final six minutes of the half, as five different Spartans contributed to the scoring during that stretch.

York shot 39.1% (9-for-23) from the floor in the first half, led by Chris Conway (Luthersville, Md. / Dulaney) and Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa. / Central Bucks South) who each totaled seven points through the first 20 minutes.

The Spartans came out of the break with a spirited effort as they out-scored the Wolverines 6-0 within the first 3:00 minutes of play to tie the score 33-33. Then, York went 0-for-4 with three turnovers as Wesley put together a 14-0 run and put an end to York's early second half momentum. From that point on, York could not get into a rhythm offensively and make an attempt to threaten the Wolverines who shot 48.3% (14-for-29) in the second half, including 44.4% (4-for-9) from three-point range.

York shot 41.7% (10-for-24) from the field in the second half, but shot a dreadful 2-11 (18.2%) from three-point land.

Wesley held a slim advantage in the turnover margin, 10-13, but the Wolverines recorded 21 points off turnovers, compared to just four points scored by the Spartans.

Scamuffo led York with a game-high 21 points on a 6-for-11 shooting performance to go with five rebounds. Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) scored 16 points with eight boards as he shot 4-for-8 from the field and 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Conway finished as the third Spartan in double-figures as he scored 10 points on a 4-for-7 performance from the field.

The Spartans wrap up this week's three-game CAC road trip as they travel to Marymount (Va.) on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
