Scamuffo's Career Day Powers Spartans Past SVU

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball season got a career-high 32 points from sophomore Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) as the Spartans defeated Southern Virginia 85-71 in the regular season finale Saturday in York.

The Spartans conclude their campaign with a mark of 10-15 overall and 6-12 in the league. The 10 wins double last year's win total as the youthful Spartans made tremendous strides during the year. With the loss, the Knights finish their regular season with a record of 9-16 overall and 8-10 in the CAC.

The Spartans got off to a great start in the game as York sprinted out to a 12-2 lead. Freshman Mike Frauenheim (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) hit a pair of three pointers on the opening run for the Spartans.

After Southern Virginia cut the lead to eight, York went on a 10-2 run to take a 24-8 lead. The Knights scored nine of the next 12 points of the game, cutting the Spartan lead to 10 but York responded with seven straight points of their own including a pair of three pointers from Scamuffo as York led 34-17 with 5:53 left in the half. The Spartan lead would grow to 19 twice in the last three minutes before York settled for the 17-point halftime lead.

The Knights came out of the intermission and made an early run at York, outscoring the Spartans 13-5 in the first four minutes of the half. The Knights cut the Spartan lead to seven six different times during the half but each time, York quickly responded by pushing the lead back into double digits. The Spartans salted away the win at the free throw line as they went 15-for-18 over the final four minutes of the game to preserve the home victory.

Scamuffo finished the game 9-for-15 from the floor including 5-for-8 from three. He was 9-for-15 from the stripe while he also had a career-high nine rebounds in his 40 minutes of play. Sophomore Zack Galic (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) had a banner day as well as he poured in a career-high 16 points, pulled in eight rebounds, and had four steals. Galic who was 5-for-8 from the floor including a trio of big dunks, also went 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Frauenheim was the third Spartan in double figures with a career-high 10 points while he also had three rebounds, three steals and six assists in his 33 minutes of work. Freshman Jason Bady (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Henderson) also registered a career-high as he had nine points including a strong 7-for-8 performance from the free throw line.

Anders Jacobson led the Knights with 18 points in his 39 minutes of play. He was 6-for-17 from the floor including 2-for-7 from three while he was 4-for-4 from the free throw line. David Baety tallied 16 points as he was 5-for-16 from the field, 2-for-5 from three and 4-for-4 from the line. Cale Thornton came off the bench to tally 15 points and seven rebounds in his 19 minutes of play. He was 7-for-8 from the floor and 1-for-3 from the line. Kevin Walker was the fourth Knight in double figures with 14 points while he also had a game-high 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Jacobson, Baety, Thornton, and Walker combined for 63 of SVU's 71 points.

The Spartans shot 47.2% from the field including 7-for-17 (41.2%) from three. York went 28-for-35 (80%) from the stripe. The 28 made free throws are a top total for the Spartans this season.

The Knights shot 39.7% from the floor including 6-of-21 (28.6%) from three. SVU made 11-of-13 from the line in the loss.

York finished the game with a 38-36 rebounding advantage while SVU had a 13-9 margin in offensive rebounds.

The Spartans must say goodbye to senior Chris Conway (Luthersville, Md./Dulaney) as he concludes his York College career with today's game. However, head coach Matt Hunter returns 11 letter winners from this year's squad including leading scorers Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) and Scamuffo. Myers finished the season averaging 16.4 points per game while Scamuffo concluded the year averaging 15.2 points per contest.
