Box Score FROSTBURG, Md. – The York College men's basketball suffered a closely contested 71-68 loss at Frostburg State on Wednesday night in the last road game of the season.
Sophomore guard Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa. / Central Bucks South) provided nearly 40% of the offense as he scored a career-high 27 points to lead all scorers and also pulled down a career-high six rebounds.
York (9-15, 5-12 CAC) jumped out to a hot start offensively by taking a 13-7 lead in the first five minutes of play, led by Scamuffo and Chris Conway (Luthersville, Md. / Dulaney) who each had five points on the opening run. The two teams battled back and forth as each side traded buckets until midway through the first half Frostburg (7-17, 5-12) went on a 12-1 run to take a 30-18 lead with 5:46 left to play in the half. The Bobcats eventually went on to take a 38-28 lead into halftime.
The Spartans came roaring back to open the second half as they went on a 12-0 within the first four minutes to erase a 10-point deficit and take a 40-38 lead. Scamuffo recorded the first and last buckets of that opening run as scored 10 of the 12 points, including two three-pointers.
The two teams went back to a back and forth battle as neither team managed to pull away. The Spartans relied heavily on the three-pointer as they shot 6-for-10 from behind the arc in the second half.
Scamuffo converted three critical foul shots with 4:05 left after he was fouled on a three-point attempt. After the free throws, the Spartans went ahead 63-62.
York gained a key shift in momentum late in the half as Frostburg committed a turnover with 2:07 left. The Spartans did not convert on the ensuing possession, but instead managed to stop the Bobcats on the next possession and took the lead on a jumper by Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) from the left elbow to take a 68-67 lead with 46 seconds left to play.
Trailing by one with 15 seconds left, he Spartans had a chance to take the lead with with Scamuffo at the line for a one-and-one opportunity. Up to that point, the sophomore had made 11 of his 12 attempts from the stripe. Unforutnaly, Scamuffo and the Spartans could not catch the break they desperately needed as the first shot rattled in and out and possession went back to Frostburg. The Bobcats sunk two foul shots on the other end of the floor and went on to close out the game from there.
The Spartans will wrap up the 2015-16 season when they return home on Saturday to face Southern Virginia at 3:00 p.m. at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
