Volleyball Campaign Closes with CAC Tournament Loss at #24 CNU

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College volleyball team saw their successful 2016 season come to an end on Tuesday evening as the 24th ranked Christopher Newport Captains blanked the Spartans 3-0 in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Captains advance to the semifinals to face the second seeded Salisbury Sea Gulls on Thursday night.

Match #31:

#24 Christopher Newport def. York 25-19, 25-6, 25-19 (3-0)

Records: Christopher Newport 24-8, York 21-10

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The first set was even early on as there were three ties in the first eight points of the match. The Captains would slowly start to pull away as they lead 16-10 on a block by Riley Garrison and Katie Piper. The Spartans would call timeout to stem the tide as York pulled to within one at 17-16 but the Captains would score three of the next four points to push out to a 20-17 lead. CNU closed out the set by scoring five of the final seven points to post the 25-19 first set win.

• The Captains took it to the Spartans early in the second set as CNU raced out to an 11-2 lead. The lead grew to as much as 19 on two different occasions before closing out the 25-6 win.

• CNU pushed out to another big lead in the third set as they led 12-5. York cut their deficit to just five at 20-15 but it would be too-little-too-late as the Green and White would eventually see their season come to an end.
