Sea Gull Defense Too Strong as Spartans Fall 75-56 on the Road

SALISBURY, Md. – The York College men's basketball team suffered a second-consecutive loss to Capital Athletic Conference opponent in a 75-56 setback on the road at Salisbury University on Wednesday night.

The matchup featured two of the nation's top-10 scoring defenses as the Sea Gulls (9-3, 2-3 CAC) entered with the fourth-ranked defense, allowing just 58.7 points per game and the Spartans (6-6, 2-3) entered with the eighth-ranked defense as they have surrendered just 59.6 points per game to thier opponents.

Though both defenses have been stout all season, the Salisbury defense made the greater impact in tonight's contest as the Sea Gulls forced 24 York turnovers, including 16 in the first half. The Spartans have been averaging just 15.5 turnovers per game entering tonight's contest and the Gulls used their defense to generate offense as they scored 26 points off those turnovers.

Salisbury took advantage of the Spartan miscues in the first half and racked up a 38-18 lead at halftime, the highest first-half point total the Spartans have surrendered this season. The Gulls shot 46.7% (14-30) from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play, while holding York to just 33.3% (7-21).

The Spartans settled into a better offensive rhythm in the second half as they shot 53.6% from the floor and battled back to cut the deficit to nine points on two separate occasions. York trailed 61-52 with 5:42 left to play, but almost effortlessly, the Gulls rattled off a 14-4 run to finish off the game and deny the Spartans any hope of a comeback.

Junior Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) had the lone bright spot for York on the night as he led all scorers with 21 points and tied sophomore Blayde Reich (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon) with a game-high nine boards. It's the eighth time this season Myers has led the team in scoring and the fifth time he has eclipsed the 20-point mark. Reich finished with 11 points and has now led the Spartans in rebounds on three separate occasions this season.

Sophomore Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa. / Central Bucks South) finished with 10 points as he has now reached double-figures in 10 games this season.

The Spartans will look to break their four-game skid and pick up a much-needed conference win when the host Marymount (Va.) (4-8, 1-4) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
