Scamuffo Scorches the Nets in Overtime; Leads York to 76-68 Win

YORK, PA – York sophomore Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) tallied 13 points in overtime to lift the York College men's basketbal lteam to a 76-68 overtime win over Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon at Charles Wolf Gymnasium. The game was played in front of a season-best crowd of 1460 fans on Alumni Day in York.

The Spartans are now 9-9 overall and 5-6 in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Sea Gulls, who entered the game riding a six game win streak, are now 14-4 overall and 7-4 in the league.

The Spartans got off to a quick start in the game as they jumped out to a 12-4 lead just over five minutes into the game. The Sea Gulls trimmed the York lead to three but the Spartans responded with a 7-0 run highlighted by another Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) dunk. The Sea Gulls would trim the Spartan lead back to five on an Adrien Straughn triple with 3:38 left in the half. The Spartans would push the lead to seven twice in the final three minutes before York settled for the 25-21 halftime advantage.

The second half was as tightly contested as a half couldn't have been much closer. The Green and White held on to their halftime lead and actually pushed the advantage to eight at 43-35. That would be the high water mark in the second half for the Spartans. Salisbury climbed back into the game as they hit York with a 17-5 run to take a 52-48 lead with 2:52 remaining in the game. Myers drew York to within two with a lay up and then tied the game at 52 on a face up jumper with 1:45 left in regulation. Jordan Brooks was fouled and gave the Gulls at 54-52 lead with a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left.

After a timeout, Scamuffo got the ball on the left wing and fed Myers in the lane. Myers had sealed his man and converted the left handed lay up to tie the game with just over eight seconds remaining. The Sea Gulls turned the ball over with .5 seconds left on the clock. York got an opportunity but they turned the ball over giving Salisbury a chance to win the game. Kyle Savercool's jumper from the baseline fell short as the teams headed to an extra session.

Scamuffo wasted little time in giving York the lead in overtime. He was fouled on a three pointer just 12 seconds into the extra session and cashed out all three free throws to give York a 57-54 lead. Rocky Harris hit a lay up on the ensuing Salisbury possession but Scamuffo answered with a three pointer to push the lead to four. Savercool then hit a three pointer to trim York's lead to one but the Spartans then scored seven straight points to take a 67-59 lead. Brooks hit a three pointer but Scamuffo hit his third three of the overtime followed by a pair of Mike Frauenheim (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) free throws to push the lead to 10. The Spartan lead would not fall below seven points the rest of the overtime as York picked up one of the biggest wins in the Matt Hunter era.

Scamuffo led the Spartans with 24 points as he was 7-for-13 from the floor including a career-high six three pointers. He was also 4-for-5 from the line. Scamuffo was nearly perfect in the overtime as he was 3-for-3 from distance in addition to 4-of-5 from the stripe.

Myers was also fantastic for York as the junior had 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists in his 40 minutes of play. Myers was 9-for-12 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the stripe in the win. Sophomore Blayde Reich (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) recorded a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He also dished out four assists with just one turnover in his 32 minutes.

Harris led Salisbury as he tossed in 17 points including 4-of-8 from three. Savercool added a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Straughn was the third Sea Gull in double figures with 11 points.

York finished the game shooting 55.3%, tied for their fourth best shooting effort of the year. The Spartans cashed out 9-of-19 from three, tying their second highest output from three for the year. The Spartans finished the game 15-for-22 from the stripe including a blistering 11-of-14 in overtime.

Salisbury converted 38.6% of their shots from the floor while they went 7-for-25 from three and a crisp 17-for-21 from the line.

York held a 35-28 advantage on the glass but Salisbury had a 12-11 margin in second chance points.

The game was the second in a series of five games in ten days for the Green and White. The next three games in the string will be on the road starting with Monday's trip to the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Tip time at the Anderson Center is set for 8:00 pm.
