Spartans Nearly Complete Second Half Comeback in 59-53 Loss to Frostburg

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – The York College men's basketball team erased a 15-point second half deficit to pull within two points of the lead late, but came up short in a 59-53 loss to Frostburg State in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night at Wolf Gymnasium.

Cold starts to both halves by the Spartans (7-9, 3-6 CAC) had them fighting from behind the entire game as they never held a lead or tie. The Bobcats (6-10, 4-5) opened with a 14-4 run to start the game and then rushed out to an 8-1 run to start the second half.

The Spartans managed to rally back and only trailed Frostburg by five at the end of first half due to a stellar shooting performance from three-point range. York shot 6-for-9 from behind the arc, led by Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa. / Central Bucks South) who went 3-for-4 in the first half. Scamuffo finished with a career-high five three-pointers made on a career-high nine attempts.

The Bobcats did not do themselves any favors and let York hang around as they rarely found the bottom of the net from three-point range. FSU shot just 17.6 percent from beyond the arc on a 3-for-17 performance.

The Spartans cut the deficit to two points (52-50) with 4:15 left to play in the second half following a 10-0 run that spanned nearly three minutes, capped off by a four-point play by Scamuffo when he was fouled on a made three-pointe field goal. However, the offensive struggles resurfaced and from that point on York only managed to score three points, while giving up seven to the Bobcats.

Collectively, York produced a better second half in almost every statistical category, but the four-minute scoring drought ultimately torpedoed any chances of completing a comeback.

Scamuffo led all scorers with 19 points as he shot 5-for-12 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Blayde Reich (Lebanon, Pa. / Lebanon) finished as York's second-leading scorer with 14 points and led the team with a career-high 10 boards as he recorded his first career double-double.

The Spartans are scheduled to travel to Mary Washington on Saturday to face the Eagles at 3:00 p.m. Due to the impending weather, Saturday's contest is subject to change, so refer ycpspartans.com for updates.
