Volleyball Plays Hard but Loses Two at Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, PA – The York College volleyball team lost both of their Saturday matches at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic in Gettysburg.

The Spartans fell to RIT 3-0 before being outlasted by Gallaudet 3-2 in the nightcap.

The Spartans are now 0-5 overall while RIT improves to 3-2. Gallaudet is a perfect 4-0 after sweeping through the competition at Gettysburg.

York opened the day by falling to RIT by scores of 25-22, 27-25 and 26-24. The Spartans played well in the match but couldn't get the key point when they needed it as they dropped their second straight match in straight sets.

Freshman Brooke Krebs (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) continued her strong start to the season with nine kills and six digs as she notched a team-high nine points. Sophomore Kelly Cavey (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) added five kills and six digs for York. Junior Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) dished out 24 assists, had two kills, two service aces, and eight digs for York. Senior libero Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the York defense with 21 digs.

RIT was led by Laiz Novaes as she had 10 kills and hit .450 in the win. Amy Van Hienen added eight kills and 13 digs.

In the nightcap, the Spartans trailed 2-0 as the Bison won the first set 25-19 and the second set 25-22. York battled back and won the next two sets 25-20 and 25-19 to force the decisive fifth set. The Bison earned the win with a 15-8 fifth set victory.

Krebs powered the Spartans as she banged out 14 kills in addition to recording 12 digs. Fellow freshman Eryn Brady (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) was the other Spartan in double figures as she notched 10 kills for York. Graziano recorded 21 digs while she also had three service aces for York. Wukitch handed out 35 assists while she also had six digs.

Tessa Lewis led the Bison with 16 kills while Molly Perkins added 15 kills of her own.

The Spartans head right back to Gettysburg on Wednesday evening as they face the Bullets in a non-conference contest at Bream Gymnasium. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
