Spartans Drop a Pair at Day One of Battlefield Classic

YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad dropped a pair of matches during the first day of the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic in Gettysburg, PA.

The Green and White dropped a heartbreaker to Neumann in the opener as the Spartans fell 3-2. Geneva then handed the Spartans a 3-0 loss in the nightcap.

York falls to 0-3 as they are still in search of win number one for new head coach Tim Bonitz. Neumann improves to 1-0 with the win over York while Geneva is now 2-0.

The loss to Neumann was painful for the Spartans as York led 2-0 after taking set one 25-23 and set two 25-22. The Knights got on the board with a 25-16 win in set three before squaring the match with a 27-25 win in the fourth. The Knights captured the win with a 15-13 fifth set victory.

Freshmen Brooke Krebs (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) and Eryn Brady (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) were both outstanding for York in the attack. Krebs had 13 kills as she recorded a team-high 14.5 points in the loss. Brady added 10 kills with zero errors in 30 attempts as she hit .333 for the match. Krebs also got it done defensively as she piled up 29 digs to go along with a service ace and a block assist. Brady contributed an ace, three block assists and eight digs.

Senior Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) added nine kills, two block solos and two block assists as she hit .286 for the match. Junior Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) dished out 44 assists while she also had 12 digs, a service ace and four kills for York. Senior libero Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded 25 digs for the Green and White.

Anna Waltz led Neumann as she had 15 kills while she also had 12 digs. Julia Malseed chipped in with 12 kills, 15 digs and three service aces.

The Spartans dropped the Geneva match by scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-8.

No Spartan had more than three kills as York managed just 13 kills for the entire match. The Green and White hit .012. Graziano led York with 14 digs.

Geneva notched 13 service aces in the victory.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they head back to Gettysburg to face RIT at 12:00 pm followed by a match against former Capital Athletic Conference foe Gallaudet at 2:00 pm.
