Box Score DOVER, DEL – The York College volleyball team overcame a two sets to none deficit to outlast Wesley College 3-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
The Wolverines captured the first two games 25-23 and 25-16 before the Spartans battled back and won the final three games 25-20, 25-22, and 15-11.
York improves to 9-12 as they have won three straight while the Wolverines are now 10-6 and 0-1 in the league.
York couldn't have gotten off to a better start in the first set as they scored six of the first seven points of the match. The Wolverines went on a 12-6 run, cutting York's lead to 14-13. York kept the lead until Wesley tied the game at 22 on a Jessica Tynes kill. The Wolverines won three of the final four points of the match to take the game one win.
The Spartans got off to another quick start in the second set as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead. The Wolverines stormed back to take a 13-12 lead. That was the start of a set-changing 12-2 run as Wesley cruised in the second set. It looked like the Wolverines were poised to pull off their first ever conference win over the Spartans. In fact, the Spartans had never dropped a set to the Wolverines in their eight previous CAC meetings.
With the Spartans' collective backs to the wall, the third set was back and forth as neither team was able to gain any significant offensive traction. The Wolverines led 17-16 but the Spartans went on a 9-3 run to pull out the 25-20 win, keeping the match alive.
York continued to battle in the fourth set as the Wolverines jumped out to a 12-7 lead. The Wesley lead grew to 19-14 before York put together another impressive spurt to capture the set. York fashioned an 11-3 run capped with three Kelly Cavey (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) kills to force the decisive fifth set.
Wesley sprinted out to a 5-1 lead in the fifth buoyed by a boisterous crowd at Wentworth Gymnasium. York answered with a 5-1 run of their own to tie the set at six. After a Wesley point on a Spartan service error, York ripped off four straight points to take a 10-7 lead. Wesley cut their deficit to 11-9 but York won four of the final six points to pull off the incredible comeback victory.
Cavey led the Spartans as the sophomore tied her career-high for the third time in the last five matches as she banged out 16 kills in the win. Cavey hit .297 with four digs and two service aces for a team-high 18 points. Freshman Brooke Krebs (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) tied her career-high with 14 kills as she hit .294 for the match. Krebs' 14 kills was the second time she reached that total in the last three matches. Krebs also had eight digs, two service aces, and one assist.
Junior setter Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) dished out a career-high 52 assists while she also had five service aces, four digs, a block solo, two block assists and two kills. Senior libero Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding), the nation's all-division leader in digs heading into tonight's action, was credited with 16 digs in the Spartan win. Freshman Eryn Brady (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) tied Graziano with 16 digs while she also had nine kills, two assists, a service ace and three block assists.
The Spartans hit .152 in the match including .444 in the third set and .400 in the decisive fifth set.
Tynes, Tionne Graves-Brown, and Codi Ziolkowski each had 12 kills to lead the Wolverines. Graves-Brown added 13 digs and two block assists. Ziolkowski chipped in with six block assists, three assists and four digs.
Beth Schiecker dished out 36 assists, had three kills, a service ace and eight digs for the Wolverines. Meghan Marshall led the Wesley defense with 14 digs while Tania Rounds had six block assists at the net for the hosts. Wesley had two solo blocks and 22 assisted blocks in the match.
The Spartans return to Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon when they host Southern Virginia University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. The match is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
