Box Score WESTMINSTER, MD – The York College volleyball squad dropped a 3-0 non-conference decision at McDaniel College on Wednesday evening in Westminster, Maryland.
The Green Terror won the match by scores of 25-23, 25-20, and 25-20. McDaniel improves to 8-4 overall while the Spartans fall to 5-11.
The first set was typical of the Spartans season as it was back-and-forth and closely played. Neither team had more than a three-point lead in the set. The set had nine ties with the last one coming at 20 all. The Green Terror went on a three-point spurt to take a 23-20 lead. York scored three of the next four points to draw to within one at 24-23 but a Lauren Wells kill ended the set in favor of the hosts.
The second set saw the Green Terror jump out to a quick lead only to have the Spartans tie the set at 10. McDaniel answered the Spartan run with a seven point run of their own to take a 17-10 lead. McDaniel maintained their lead and pushed it to nine at 24-15 before the Spartans went on a five-point run to cut the lead to four. Wells again ended the set with a kill as the Green Terror earned the five-point second set win.
The third set played like a broken record for York. The set was tied at seven before the Green Terror scored eight of the sets next 11 points to seize a 15-11 lead. York drew to within three at 20-17 but that is as close as the Spartans would get in the final set.
Kloe Martin led the Green Terror with 10 kills and 13 digs. Wells and Lexi Corral added eight kills each while Colette Kellen handed out 21 assists and notched 12 digs. Taylor Bauman contributed 12 digs and banged out a match-high five service aces. The Green Terror hit .243 for the match including .308 in the third set.
Sophomore Kelly Cavey (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) led the Spartans with 10 kills, a solo block and a block assist. Eryn Brady (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) and Brooke Krebs (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) each added six kills while Krebs also registered 13 digs.
Senior Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Spartan defense with a match-high 17 digs while she also had two service aces. Junior setter Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) dished out 26 assists, had two service aces, four kills and five digs.
The Spartans hit .142 for the match and committed just three service errors for the night.
The Spartans return to action on Friday and Saturday when they host the York College Spartan Volleyball Classic at Wolf Gymnasium. The six-team tournament kicks off Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm with the Spartans taking on FDU Florham in the tournament's first match. York will then host Alvernia at 8:00 pm on Friday evening.
