Spartans Sweep Two Matches on Friday in Williamsport

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The York College volleyball squad had their best night of the young season as they swept a pair of matches at Friday's opening day of the 22nd Annual Warrior Tip Off Classic hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.

The Spartans knocked off the host Lycoming Warriors 3-0 in the tournament's opening match. The Green and White then outlasted Pitt-Bradford 3-2 in the Spartans' nightcap for their second win of the day.

York improves to 3-5 overall as they have won three straight. Lycoming falls to 3-2 with the loss to the Spartans while Pitt-Bradford falls to 3-3.

In the opener against the Warriors, the Spartans won the match 25-19, 27-25, and 25-17. The Spartans hit a season-high .291 as a team with 44 kills and just 12 errors in 110 attempts. Freshman Eryn Brady (King of Prussia, Pa./Lower Merion) led the way with 13 kills and a .370 attack percentage in 27 attempts. She also had four digs and a block assist for the Spartans. Sophomore Kelly Cavey (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) added eight kills, a service ace and seven digs for York. Freshman Brooke Krebs (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) chipped in with seven kills while she also hit .316 with eight digs.

Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) dished out 29 assists to go along with 10 digs, four kills, two service aces and a block assist in the victory. Senior Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Spartan defense with 19 digs in the match.

In the win over Pitt-Bradford, the Green and White won the match by scores of 19-25, 25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 15-11.

The Spartans did not have the offensive success in the second match but found a way to grind out a win. Krebs led the offense with 12 kills while she also recorded three service aces, 15 digs and three block assists. Heather Kline (Woodbridge, N.J.Woodbridge) contributed 10 kills while she added three block assists. Brady chipped in with eight kills, a block solo and two block assists.

The Spartans hit just .066 for the match but recorded 10 service aces and 79 digs.

Graziano again paced York's defensive effort with 30 digs. It is the third time this year she has reached 30 digs in a match. Wukitch added 14 digs while she handed out 41 assists, her third 40-plus assist effort of the year. Junior Emily Maxwell (Cochranville, Pa./Octorara) was the fourth Spartan in double figures in digs as she notched 10 in the win.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday morning when they face Penn College at 9:30 am followed by a match with Allegheny at 11:30 am in the second day of the tournament.
