Diplomats Spoil Bonitz's Debut

Box Score

YORK, PA – The Franklin & Marshall volleyball squad spoiled the debut of new York College coach Tim Bonitz as the Diplomats blanked the Spartans 3-0 on Tuesday night in York.

The Diplomats won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-14, and 25-23. Franklin & Marshall has won two straight in the series while the Spartans dropped their season opener for the first time in three years.

The Spartans featured a starting lineup with three freshmen, two juniors and a senior as Bonitz has a very young squad in 2015. The Green and White showed some nerves over the first two sets before settling in and playing much better in the third set despite the two-point loss in the final game.

The Diplomats hit .214 in the win led by Ellie Ezekiel as she banged out a match-high 12 kills in 34 attempts. Ezekiel led Franklin & Marshall with 15.5 points as she also had two service aces, a solo block and a block assist. Rachel Umberger added nine kills in just 17 attempts as she hit a blistering .471 for the match. Cassie Garison chipped in five kills, three service aces, a pair of solo blocks and a block assist. Allison Edelstein dished out 32 assists while she also had three service aces and seven digs for the Dips.

The Spartan offense was paced by the duo of Brooke Krebs (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) and Heather Kline (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) as they each had six kills. Krebs also had seven digs and a block assist to lead York with 6.5 points. Freshman setter Molly McCann (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) dished out 21 assists in her first collegiate start.

Senior Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was again stellar as the Spartans' first team All-Capital Athletic Conference libero had a match-high 30 digs to pace the Spartan defense.

The Diplomats finished the match with 10 service aces and 10 service errors. York managed just two service aces while they committed seven service errors.

The Spartans return to action on Friday afternoon when they head to Gettysburg to participate in the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic. York faces Neumann at 3:00 pm followed by a match with Geneva at 5:00 pm.
