Box Score ARLINGTON, VA – The York College men's basketball team battled one of the top teams in the Capital Athletic Conference on the road on Saturday. Unfortunately for York, the result was much like it has been for the Spartans most of the year as the Marymount University Saints escaped a Spartan upset bid 58-54 in conference action.
The Saints improve to 17-4 overall and 11-3 in the conference. The Spartans fall to 4-17 overall and 3-11 in the league.
The first half was back and forth early before the Saints scored 13 of the final 20 points of the stanza to take a 28-24 lead to the break.
The second half was much of the same as neither team could pull away from the other. The half featured eight ties and six lead changes before the Saints could secure the win. With the game tied at 54 after a Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) lay up with 47 seconds left, the Saints found Dmitri Rucker for a wide open lay up with 34 seconds remaining, putting Marymount up two. The Spartans pounded the ball into Myers with 13 seconds left but he was a little too far under the basket and his shot hit the bottom of the backboard and the Saints corralled the defensive rebound. York was forced to foul with nine seconds left and D'Ondre Stockman sunk both free throws to secure the win. The Spartans got a pair of shots but couldn't connect as York dropped the four point decision.
Stockman came off the bench to pour in 17 points for the Saints. Stockman was 5-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-8 from three. Stockman was also 3-for-4 from the line in the win. JC Hoellich was the other Saint in double figures with 11 points. Hoellich added five rebounds and a pair of blocked shots for the Saints.
Myers had a big day for the Green and White as he tallied a game-high 28 points. Myers was 11-for-18 from the floor and 1-for-1 from three. He was 5-for-7 from the free throw line as he also pulled down seven rebounds in the game. Freshman Max Bell (Finksburg, Md./Francis Scott Key) also played well for York as he pulled in a career-high 14 rebounds in addition to scoring eight points. Bell was 4-for-6 from the field in his 20 minutes of work. No other Spartan had more than five points in the loss.
Marymount finished the game shooting 35.8% from the field including 8-for-23 (34.8%) from three. The Saints had a pronounced advantage from the free throw line as they went 12-for-19 (63.2%) while the Spartans made just nine trips to the line as they made six.
York outrebounded the Saints 39-29 but the Spartans' 19 turnovers negated their rebounding advantage. Marymount scored 16 points off the Spartan turnovers while York got just two points off the nine Marymount mistakes. The Spartans did hold a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Mary's College in a CAC tilt. Tip time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 8:00 pm.
