Box Score BUENA VISTA, VA – The York College ran into a buzz saw on Saturday as the Southern Virginia University Knights shot 59% from the floor en route to an 83-58 Capital Athletic Conference win Saturday in Buena Vista, Virginia.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 4-19 overall and 3-13 in the CAC. The Knights improve to 6-16 overall and 4-12 in the league.
The Spartans got off to a solid start as they led 11-9 just under seven minutes into the game. The Knights then hit the Green and White with a 17-5 run to push out to a 26-16 lead. After the Spartans cut the lead to eight on a Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) bucket, the Knights scored 11 of the next 13 points to push out to a 38-20 lead. Southern Virginia finished the half with a 42-23 lead. SVU shot a blistering 65.4% from the floor in the first half including 5-for-9 (55.6%) from three.
It didn't get any better for York in the second half as the Knights maintained their hot shooting. York cut the lead 16 but that would be as close as they would get.
The game was dramatic departure from the Spartans' 79-51 victory over the Knights four weeks ago in York.
The Knights placed four players in double figures led by Kevin Walker as he tossed in 16 points, handed out six assists and garnered six steals in 34 minutes of work. Taylor Larson added 13 points and five rebounds while Kyle Dragnich contributed 12 points and seven assists. Aarun Rumbaugh was the fourth Knight in double figures with 12 points and five rebounds.
Myers was the only Spartan to reach double figures as he notched 15 points in his 27 minutes of action. Myers was 4-for-6 from the floor including 2-of-3 from distance. Myers also made 5-of-8 from the free throw line. Freshman Blayde Reich (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) added a career-high nine points off the bench as he continues to play well for York. Max Bell (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Chris Conway (Luthersville, Md./Dulaney) each added eight points to the Spartan offense.
The Knights finished the game shooting 58.5% from the floor including 53.8% (7-for-13) from three. SVU converted 14-of-19 from the free throw line. York shot 46.2% from the field but just 3-of-16 (18.8%) from distance. The Spartans converted 73.1% (19-for-26) from the free throw line.
York concludes the regular season with a pair of home conference contests. The Spartans host Frostburg State in a league game on Wednesday night. Tip off at Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 8:00 pm.
