Spartans Split Saturday Pair at CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia.

The Spartans knocked off Lycoming College 3-0 in the opener before falling to #5 Christopher Newport 3-0 in the second match of the day.

The Spartans are now 11-16 overall and 2-4 in the CAC. Lycoming falls to 17-11 while CNU stands at 25-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the league.

In the opener, the Spartans bested the Warriors by scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-21. The Spartans were led by freshman Brooke Krebs (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) as she had 10 kills and hit .318 for the match. Krebs added five digs and a service ace for York. Sophomore Kelly Cavey (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) contributed seven kills, four digs, and a block assist for YCP.

Junior Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) handed out 24 assists, had a match-high five service aces, three kills, and seven digs in the win. Senior libero Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Spartans' defensive effort with a match-high 22 digs while she also had a service ace for York.

The nationally ranked Captains had little trouble with the Spartans in the nightcap as they earned the victory by scores of 25-17, 25-14, and 25-7.

Briana Sutton powered the Captains with 11 kills in just 22 attempts with no errors for a .500 attack percentage while she also had 16 digs. Rachel Conway had 28 assists while Abby McIntyre added six kills, 14 digs, and two service aces.

The Spartans were paced by Cavey as she notched a team-high seven kills as she hit .238 for the match. Krebbs added five kills and four digs while Wukitch had 15 assists, three service aces and seven digs. Graziano had 15 digs for the York defense.

The Spartans return to action on Monday night when they host Southern Virginia University in a make up Capital Athletic Conference contest. The match is slated for a 6:00 pm start at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.
