Spartans Earn Road Win at Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA – The York College volleyball squad played just their second match in the last 15 days as the Spartans shook off the rust and downed Penn State Harrisburg 3-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night in Middletown.

The Spartans improve to 10-13 overall and 2-1 in the conference while the Lions fall to 9-12 overall and 0-4 in the league. York has won five of their last six matches.

York won the final three sets of the match after dropping the opening set 25-22. York won the next three sets by scores of 25-9, 25-17, and 25-16.

The Spartans were a little rusty early on as the Lions jumped out to a 13-7 lead. York put together a 7-3 run to trim their deficit to 16-14. That started a back-and-forth period where neither team led by more than three until the Lions scored three straight to take a 23-19 lead. York got back-to-back kills from Kelly Cavey (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) and Eryn Brady (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) to cut the Harrisburg lead to 23-22. The Lions closed out the first set win with consecutive points to capture the 1-0 advantage.

After the Lions scored the first point of the second set, York ran off seven straight to take momentum of the set. The Spartan lead grew to 16-5 as York cruised to the 25-9 second set victory.

The third set saw the Spartans get off to another good start as they led 7-2 after nine points. The Lions roared back and tied the set at 10. York answered with a 9-3 run to take a 19-13 lead. York then scored six of the final 10 points of the set to take the 2-1 lead.

The Green and White did an outstanding job of putting the match away in the fourth set as York slowly pulled away from Harrisburg. York led 6-5 and pushed the lead to 18-10. The Lions cut the York lead to 22-16 before the Spartans scored the final three points of the match.

Freshman Brooke Krebs (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) led the Spartans with a career-high 15 kills as she hit a blistering .500 in the match. Krebs added 10 digs, an assist, a service ace and a block assist. Cavey added 13 kills in 26 attempts with one error as she hit .462. Brady chipped in with nine kills and three block assists to the Spartan effort.

Junior Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) dished out 36 assists, had three service aces, and eight digs for York. Senior libero Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Spartan defense with 11 digs.

Madison Chance led Harrisburg with nine kills and three block assists. Melissa Orlandini added eight kills for the Lions. Casey Stump had 23 assists and 23 digs to lead Harrisburg in both categories.

York hit .262, their highest total since the September 11 match against Lycoming. York has now hit over .200 in four matches this season.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday morning when they travel to Marymount University to face the Saints in an 11:00 am conference match in Arlington, Virginia.
