Big Run Lifts Marymount over York in CAC Tilt

YORK, PA – The Marymount University Saints used a big second half to overcome an upset minded York College Spartan men's basketball team, 80-61, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night in York.

The Saints improve to 10-2 with the win while they also rise to 4-1 in the conference. The Green and White falls to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in the league.

The game was back and forth early as there were six lead changes and six ties over the opening 14 minutes of play. With the game tied at 25, the Spartans went on an 8-3 run to push their lead to a game-high five points with 4:19 left in the stanza. The Saints would end the half outscoring the Green and White 10-3 over the final 3:18 of the half as Marymount took a 38-35 lead to the break.

The Saints came out the break and hit the Spartans with another run as they fashioned a 15-3 spurt to push their lead 53-38. The two runs combined for a total of 25-6 in the stretch of 10 minutes of game action. The Spartans would draw to within 13 six different times but each time York challenged the Saints, Marymount would answer with big bucket after big bucket to keep the Green and White at bay.

The Saints put the game away with 10-0 spurt that turned a 13 point lead into a 23 point bulge.

The Saints placed three players in double figures led by senior Jesse Konadu as he poured in 20 points in 29 minutes of play. Konadu was 5-for-10 from the floor with one three while he cashed in all nine of his free throw attempts in the win. Konadu added three rebounds and two assists. Fellow senior Antonio Rouse added a very efficient 14 points, as he was 4-for-5 from the floor including 2-for-3 from three and 4-for-4 from the stripe. JC Hoelich was the third Saint in double figures with 12 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and two blocked shots in his 28 minutes of work.

Marymount had 11 players reach the scoring column while 12 players grabbed at least one rebound in the victory.

The Spartans placed four players in double figures led by sophomore Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) as he tallied 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Myers was 6-for-13 from the floor and 2-for-2 from three. Freshman Matt Scamuffo (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) added 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal in his career-high 34 minutes of play. Scamuffo reached double figures for the fifth time this year and fourth time in the last five games.  

Freshman Mike Duffy (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and sophomore Tyler Alcid (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) each added 10 points in the game. Duffy finished 3-for-6 from the field including 3-for-5 from three while he went 1-for-2 from the line. Alcid was 3-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe. Junior Chris Conway (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) led the Spartans on the glass as he pulled in a career-high seven boards in just 19 minutes of action.

The Saints shot the ball great all night long as they finished the game converting 52.9% from the floor and 42.9% (6-for-14) from three. Marymount was also good from the free throw line as they went 20-for-28 (71.4%).

The Spartans were really good from the floor in the first half as they shot 56.5% (13-for-23) from the floor. The second half was a much different story as York converted just 8-of-28 (28.6%) from the field. The Spartans finished the game shooting 41.2% from the field, and 46.7% (7-for-15) from three. The Green and White struggled from the free throw line as they went 12-for-21 (57.1%) from the stripe. It was their lowest free throw shooting percentage of the year.

The Saints held a slight 35-31 rebounding margin in the game while they also had a 17-11 margin in second chance points and a big 36-14 edge in points in the paint.

York committed 16 turnovers while the Saints had 11 mistakes in the contest. Marymount nabbed 20 points off the Spartan miscues while York converted the Saints mistakes into 12 points.

The Marymount bench outscored their York counterparts 27-9 in the game.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they kick off a two-game road trip at Salisbury. Tip time at the Maggs Center is set for 4:00 pm.
