Mary Washington Shoots Past Spartans in CAC Clash

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The York College Spartans dropped a 76-65 Capital Athletic Conference decision at Mary Washington on Saturday in Fredericksburg, VA.

The Eagles improve to 4-13 overall and 4-6 in the CAC. Mary Washington has won four of their seven games in January after starting the season 0-10. The Spartans fall to 4-13 overall and 3-7 in the league.

The opening minutes of the game were back and forth with neither team able to secure any significant momentum. The two teams were tied at 12 when the Spartans went on a 14-6 run to take a 26-18 lead with 4:14 remaining in the half.

The Eagles would respond by outscoring York 13-5 over the final 4:01 of the half as the squads headed to the intermission tied at 31. Eagle senior Taylor Johnson and Matt Forrest each cashed out a pair of three pointers on the run including Johnson's triple with 12 seconds left in the half to forge the halftime tie.

The Eagles came storming out of the intermission as they scored three points in the first 13 seconds of the half. The Spartans cut their deficit to two twice on a pair of Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) lay ups but the Eagles scored seven points on three consecutive possessions to push their lead to 44-35 with 16:15 left in the game.

York cut the lead to five on a Tyler Alcid (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) jumper but Asa Scott hit a lay up and a three on back-to-back possessions, pushing the lead to ten. After a timeout, John Lutkenhaus drilled a three and the Spartans would not get closer than ten points the rest of the way.

Johnson led all scorers as the senior poured in 25 points including his 1,000th career point. Johnson was 7-for-15 from the floor including 6-for-13 from three and 5-for-6 from the line. He also had three assists, three steals and two rebounds. Eric Shaw contributed 14 points and four rebounds while Scott was the third Eagle in double figures with 10 points. Issac Blue came off the bench to dish out seven assists for the Eagles.

Myers led the Spartans as the sophomore forward recorded 18 points in his 38 minutes of action. Myers was 8-of-11 from the floor including 1-of-3 from three. He went 1-for-1 from the line. Junior Chris Conway (Luthersville, Md./Dulaney) poured in a career-high 15 points, as he was 7-for-11 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the line. Conway also pulled in three rebounds for York. Sophomore Evan Crosby (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) led York with eight rebounds while he also scored seven points.

The Eagles shot 45.3% from the floor including a 12-of-35 (34.3%) performance from three. Mary Washington's 12 three pointers are a season-high as are their 35 attempts. UMW was 16-for-24 (66.7%) from the free throw line in the win.

York shot the ball well from the floor as York converted 27-of-55 (49.1%) while they went just 4-of-18 (22.2%) from three. York went to the line just 12 times as they made seven of their attempts.

The Spartans won the battle of the boards 33-29 which also led them to have a 17-8 margin in second chance points.

York committed 17 turnovers while the Eagles had just eight turnovers. The Eagles held a 19-7 margin in points off turnovers.

The Spartans return home on Wednesday night, as they will host Penn State Harrisburg in a CAC contest. Tip time at Wolf Gym is set for 8:00 pm.
