Myers Tallies 19 In Road Loss at Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury University men's basketball team drained 15 three pointers en route to a 88-51 Capital Athletic Conference win over York College in league play on Saturday in Salisbury, Maryland.

The Sea Gulls improve to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in the league. Salisbury has won six of seven after a 2-4 start to the season.

The Spartans led for the opening six minutes of the game until Justin Witmer hit a triple that kick started a 21-3 run. That run turned a three-point Salisbury deficit into a 15 point Sea Gull lead. The Sea Gulls continued to pull away in the late stages of the first half as they led 42-23 at the break.

Salisbury was red hot from the perimeter as they canned nine three pointers in the opening 20 minutes of play. The Sea Gulls actually took 21 three point field goal attempts in the first while they attempted just 11 shots from inside the arc in the half. While Salisbury was bombing away from the perimeter the Spartans were just 8-for-18 from the floor including 0-for-2 from three.

Salisbury opened the second half with an 11-1 run as they put the game out of reach as the lead grew to 29 less than four minutes into the second half.

York never got closer than 23 the rest of the way as Salisbury cruised to their third straight win.

The Sea Gulls finished with four players in double figures led by Rocky Harris as he poured in 16 points on five three pointers and a free throw. Wyatt Smith added 12 points and seven rebounds in just 18 minutes of play for the Gulls. Witmer and Kyle Savercool each contributed 11 points to the Salisbury offensive effort.

Sophomore Dalton Myers (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) led the Spartans with a game-high 19 points in his 29 minutes of action. Myers was 7-for-9 from the floor including 1-for-1 from three and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. He also pulled in two rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. Three other Spartans scored seven points in the game.

York finished the game shooting 46.3% from the floor including 3-for-8 from three. The Spartans were cold from the free throw line as they were just 10-for-21 in the loss. York also committed 20 turnovers in the game as the Sea Gulls turned those miscues into 27 points.

Salisbury shot 51.7% from the floor while they were 15-for-33 (45.5%) from three. Salisbury has now made 40 three point field goals in their last three games while they are shooting 50.8% in their last three contests, all wins. Salisbury converted 11-for-17 from the charity stripe in the win.

Salisbury dominated on the glass as they outrebounded York 36-23 including 14 offensive rebounds for the Gulls.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Frostburg State University to face the Bobcats. Tip time at Bobcat Arena is slated for 8:00 pm.
