Mallory's Five-Point Performance Propells York Past Lynchburg, 4-1

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – The York College field hockey team improves to 6-0 at home with a convincing 4-1 victory over Lynchburg on Play For Trey Day on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Autumn Mallory (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) played a major role in securing the victory for the Spartans (8-2) as she accumulated five points on the day with two goals and an assist, in addition to tallying the game-winning goal.

York's leading scorer, freshman Ali Posey (Airville, Pa./Red Lion), got the scoring started in the 12th minute as she sent a rocket shot to the back of the cage after receiving a feed from freshman Beth Patrick (Pitman, N.J./Pitman) on the right. Patrick would later add a second assist on Mallory's second goal.

Freshman Shania Gelvin (Hustontown, Pa./Forbes Road) tallied York's fourth and final goal of the contest as she executed a beautiful deflection that went up over the goalie's head after Mallory sent in a hard strike from the right side. Gelvin ranks second on the squad with 15 points on seven goals and one assist.

The Spartan defensive unit, anchored by senior Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), once again was able to close out the game with the lead. Saylor and fellow senior Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) were able to snuff out numerous Lynchburg runs late in the second half.

Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Everett (Windsor, Pa./Red Lion) turned in another fine performance in the cage for York as she posted five saves to just one goal allowed.

York once again defeated a team that they have not historically faired well against as they improve to 3-6 all-time versus Lynchburg (4-6) and picked up a win against the Hornets for the first time since 2003.

The Spartans will not return to action until next Saturday, October 4, when they face No. 12 Christopher Newport at home to open CAC play. Game is slated for 11 a.m. and will kick off of a full day of events as York hosts its annual Fall Fest Weekend.
