Box Score 2 YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad split their two matches during the second day of the 2014 York College Spartan Volleyball Invitational presented by York Barbell on Saturday in York.
The Spartans defeated Farmingdale 3-1 in the opener as they downed the Rams 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, and 25-13. York fell to Stevenson in the nightcap as the Mustangs recorded the win by the scores of 25-15, 25-21, 14-25, and 25-17.
The Spartans are now 7-12 overall as they went 2-2 during their four tournament games.
In the opener, the Spartans were paced by the duo of Charlotte Sabatano (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Kayla Gibbs (York, Pa./York Suburban). Sabatano banged out a match-high 15 kills as she hit .500 for the match. Gibbs added 11 kills and 17 digs for the double-double. Gibbs also hit .500 in the win. Senior Jackie Schwarm (Lanham, Md./Homeschooled) played well offensively for YCP as she added eight kills and a .375 attack percentage in the win.
Senior Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) dished out 19 assists with nine digs, three service aces, and a pair of kills. Sophomore Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) contributed 14 assists and eight digs for the Green and White. Junior Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led the Spartans with a match-high 18 digs.
In the match up against the Mustangs, Sabatano and senior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led the Spartans with 13 and 12 kills respectively. Sabatano added 14 digs while Huston also had a double-double with 11 digs.
Martinak distributed 31 assists to go along with 10 digs and two solo blocks.
Defensively, Graziano recorded 38 digs in the loss while Gibbs also reached double figures with 13.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Catholic University to face the Cardinals in a non-conference match. The match at the DuFour Center is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
