Box Score 2 YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad split their two matches during the opening round of the 2014 York College Spartan Volleyball Invitational. The Spartans defeated PSU Abington 3-0 in the opening round before dropping a 3-1 decision to Virginia Wesleyan in the nightcap.
The Spartans are now 6-11 overall while PSU Abington stands at 7-9. Virginia Wesleyan won their two opening day matches as they are now 11-4.
The scores for the PSU Abington match were 25-22, 25-14, and 25-11. The final tally for the Virginia Wesleyan match was 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, and 25-11.
Against the Lions, senior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) was spectacular as she registered 13 kills in just 19 attempts with one error for a blistering .632 attack percentage. Junior Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) added seven kills in 14 attempts while Dorsey also had two solo blocks.
Senior setter Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) dished out 29 assists while she also had seven digs and a service ace. Freshman Kayla Gibbs (York, Pa./York Suburban) led the defensive effort with 15 digs. Gibbs also had two service aces and three kills. Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Emma Geisser (Derwood, Md./Magruder) contributed 13 digs each.
In the loss to Virginia Wesleyan, junior Charlotte Sabatano (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) led the Green and White with 17 kills in 52 attempts. She added eight digs and two service aces. Huston chipped in with seven kills and 11 digs while Gibbs tallied seven kills and 18 digs.
Martinak registered 30 assists while Graziano led the York defense with 19 digs.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday afternoon when they face Albright in a 12:00 pm match The Green and White will also face Stevenson in a 4:00 pm match.
