Box Score YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad posted a much needed come-from-behind non-conference 3-2 victory over Gettysburg College on Wednesday night in York.
The win snaps a six match losing streak for the Spartans while the loss halts the Bullets' five-match win streak. York is now 5-10 overall while the Bullets at 11-5.
The match scores were 25-27, 25-8, 23-25, 25-19, and 15-9.
The first set result could have been devastating as the Green and White held a seven point lead at 19-12. The Bullets went on a 9-2 run, tying the set at 21. York took a brief 22-21 lead before the Bullets ripped off a quick three goal spurt to take a 24-22 lead. York tied the set at 24 and it was tied again at 25 before the Bullets got the final two points of the second to earn the win.
The Spartans showed no hangover in the second set as they gained control of the set early. The Spartans opened the set with a 12-1 run and never looked back as they settled for the 17-point set two win.
The third set saw the Spartans get off to another quick start with a 14-6 lead. The Bullets climbed back into the match with 13-6 run which tied the set at 19. The set would be tied again at 20, 21, 22, and 23 before the Bullets earned the final two points of the set to take an overall 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was yet another tightly contested game. Gettysburg led 13-7 but the Spartans came roaring back with a 12-3 run as York took a 19-15 lead. Gettysburg scored the next two points but that's as close as they would get as the Spartans earned the six point win, setting up a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth set, with the teams tied at five, the Spartans went on a 6-0 spurt to take an 11-5 lead. Gettysburg worked the York lead down to four at 11-7 before the Green and White closed out the game with two straight points.
Junior Charlotte Sabatano (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) led the Spartans as she banged out a match, and career-high 19 kills. Sabatano hit a blistering .515 for the match in addition to picking up 12 digs, three solo blocks, and a service ace. Junior Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) added nine kills, three blocks and a .368 attack percentage. Freshman Kayla Gibbs (York, Pa./York Suburban) added eight kills and nine digs while senior Katie Hutson (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) contributed eight kills, two assists and 11 digs.
Senior Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) dished out a career-high 48 assists while she also had eight digs and a solo block. Junior Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had 37 digs, just one short of her career high. Junior Emma Geisser (Derwood, Md./Magruder also played well for York with seven kills, 14 digs, one block, and a service ace.
Joosje Grevers led the Bullets with 13 kills and a .314 attack percentage. Stephanie Blair dished out 31 assists in addition to six kills, and 11 digs.
The Spartans return to action on Friday afternoon when the host the 2014 York College Spartan Volleyball Invitational. The tournament action kicks off at 3:00 pm. The Spartans play their first game at 5:00 pm against PSU Abington.
