Spartans Fall in Pair of Competitive Matches on Saturday

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The York College volleyball squad dropped a pair of tough losses during the second day of the 21st Annual Warrior Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Lycoming College on Saturday afternoon in Williamsport, Pa.

The Spartans fell to Houghton 3-2 in a hard fought contest in the opener. Susquehanna got by the Green and White 3-0 in the second match of the day. The Houghton scores were 25-22, 25-20, 11-25, 15-25, 15-8. Susquehanna defeated York by the scores of 25-22, 25-22, and 25-13.

The Spartans fall to 4-6 with the two setbacks. Houngton improves to 6-3 with their win over York while Susquehanna continues an excellent season, as they are 11-1.

In the opener against Houghton, senior Katie Huston (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) did everything she could to keep the Green and White in the match with 12 kills and a .407 attack percentage. Huston also had a solo block and an assist for YCP. Junior Charlotte Sabatano (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) added nine kills, two blocks and three digs to the Spartan effort. Freshman Kayla Gibbs (York, Pa./York Suburban) came off the bench to record a career-high eight kills and seven digs.

Senior Kristin Martinak (Hanover, Pa./South Western) dished out 26 assists while she also recorded five kills, 18 digs, and a solo block. Sophomore Sarah Wukitch (East Greenville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) handed out 16 helpers for York while she also had seven digs.

Junior Katherine Graziano (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) contributed 16 digs to the Spartan defense while Alison Dorsey (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) had five solo blocks and seven kills in a strong effort for York.

In the match against Susquehanna, Huston was again stellar as the senior had 12 kills and just one error in 24 attempts for a .458 attack percentage. Gibbs added six kills, a team-high 17 digs, one service ace, and a solo block.

Martinak finished with 15 assists, four kills, two service aces, and eight digs. Wukitch had nine assists, a service ace and three digs. Graziano added 12 digs for YCP.

Sabatano earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. It was her second All-Tournament team honor of the year for the Spartan junior.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Gettysburg to face the Bullets in a non-conference contest. The match is set for a 7:00 pm start at Bream Gymnasium.
