WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The York College wrestling team accumulated a clean sweep with a record of 3-0 on Saturday at the John Reese Duals hosted by Wilkes University as the Spartans defeated Wilkes, Rowan College at Gloucester County and SUNY Oneonta. Note, the match against Rowan College will not count towards York's overall team dual record as the Spartans will face the Roadrunners later in the season at home.
York 19, Wilkes 15
York (2-0) started the day off by defeating the host Colonels of Wilkes University (3-1) by a score of 19-15.
The Spartans dropped the first three bouts, but then went on a tear, winning six of the next seven matches. Drew Spector (West Deptford, N.J. / West Deptford) started the rally with a 4-2 decision at 149 and he was followed by Chad Wickard (Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) who scored a 7-4 decision at 157.
York went on to sweep the final four bouts as Steven Loevsky (Roselle Park, N.J. / Roselle Park) decisioned his man 12-6 at 174, Nick Zak (Jackson, N.J. / Jackson Liberty) picked up an 8-4 win at 184, John Shorter (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township) earned an 8-0 major decision at 197 and Mike Spencer (Pompton Plains, N.J. / Pequannock Township) ground out a 3-1 decision at 285 in the final bout as the Spartans won the dual.
York 22, Rowan College at Gloucester County 14
YCP once again found itself battling from behind after dropping the first bout to Rowan (0-3), but like before, York rebounded quickly. Ryan Flynn (Newtown Square Pa. / Marple Newtown) gave his team a big boost as he tech falled his opponent at 133 by a score of 13-4. Thomas Moss (Williamstown, N.J. / Williamstown) gave York consecutive bout wins as he pinned his man at 1:53 into the match at 141 pounds.
The Spartans struggled through the middleweights, as they went 1-3 from 149-174. Adam Kritzer (Herndon, Pa. / Line Mountain) claimed York's only win through that portion of the match as claimed an 11-6 decision at 157.
The Green and White finished strong, sweeping the final three bouts at 184, 197 and 285. Nate Bueno (Wallington, N.J. / Becton/Wallington) picked up an 11-5 decision at 184, Troy Uhrin (Archbald, Pa. / Valley View) won a 13-7 decision at 197 and Spencer picked up his second victory of the day with a 5-1 decision at 285.
York 31, SUNY Oneonta 6
The Spartans finished the day on an extremely positive note as they manhandled the Red Dragons (1-2), wining eight of 10 bouts to claim the convincing victory.
York won the first six bouts, starting with a 1-0 decision at 125 by Evan Zuzulock (West Deptford, N.J. / West Deptford). YCP then got a 14-5 major decision victory at 133 by Flynn.
The Spartans ripped off four straight decisions at 141, 149, 157 and 165. Jeffrey Walker (Bristow, Va. / Brentsville) won a 10-5 decision at 141, followed by a 4-1 decision at 149 by John Allenson (Glenside, Pa. / Germantown Academy). Wickard claimed his second win of the day with a 10-4 decision at 157 and Mitchell Ramsey (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) won a 4-0 bout at 165.
York finished the dual winning two of the last four bouts with Zak picking up his second win of the day at 184 as he pinned his man 5:00 into the match. Shorter also got his second win of the day as he also pinned his man in the 197 bout at 2:00 into his match.
A few Spartans saw action in exhibition matches outside the team duals. David Keith (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) earned a pin at 2:39 at the 157 pound weight class. Brennan Humphrey (Medford, N.J. / Shawnee) also pinned his man in the 165 bout at 2:08 into his match. Steven Lee (Kings Park, N.Y. / Kings Park) had a strong showing at 184 as he earned an 8-5 decision.
The Spartans will look to keep their momentum rolling as they host their first home dual match of the season on November 16 at 12:00 p.m. against Waynesburg.
