Box Score YORK, PA – The York College volleyball squad captured
their third in-season tournament title with a 3-0 demolition of a
talented Virginia Wesleyan squad on Saturday afternoon in York. The
Spartans earned the championship of the 2010 York College Spartan
Volleyball Invitational and en route, won their school-record
15th consecutive match.
The Spartans won by scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-8. York is
now 16-1 overall while the Marlins fall to 11-3.
The Green and White came out of the gate a little shaky as the
confident Marlin squad jumped out to an early five-point advantage.
The Spartans surged ahead and took the lead for good late in the
set as the tone was set for the remainder of the match. The
Spartans broke open the second set midway through game and then
blitzed the Marlins in set three to earn the championship.
The balanced Spartan attack was led by senior Alysse Beshore as she had a team-high nine kills for the match.
Junior Heather Bucher played another all around
great match with seven kills, 11 digs, three service aces and two
assists in the victory. Bucher did not make an attack error in the
match as she hit .368 for the contest. Senior Alishia Waltermyer was also very potent offensively with eight
kills and no errors in 17 attempts, which converted into a .471
attack percentage.
Setter Cortni Rentzel was her steady self with
33 assists and 10 digs for yet another double-double. Reigning CAC
Player of the Week Ashley Rineman turned in
another tremendous defensive effort with 28 digs while she also had
a service ace and a kill.
The Spartans will put their win streak on the line on Thursday
September 30 when they travel to St. Mary's to face the
Seahawks in a huge CAC contest. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm
start. Each squad got to see a little of each other this weekend as
the Seahawks placed third at the tournament with their five-set win
over Carnegie Mellon.
