YORK, PA – The York College rode the efforts of freshman Jessica Moyer as the outside hitter saved the Spartans' 13 match win streak with a career defining performance on Friday night.  The Spartans outlasted Carnegie Mellon in five sets late Friday evening in the final match of the day at the 2010 York College Spartan Volleyball Invitational.  York won the match 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 20-25, and 19-17.

The Spartans improve to 14-1 overall while the Tartans fall to 9-7 for 2010.

The Green and White looked dead in the water in the fifth set after blowing a 2-0 lead for the second consecutive match. The Tartans led 8-2 in the fifth set as the teams changed sides during the 15-point final set. The Spartans trailed 13-6 when they began their improbable comeback. The hosts went on an 8-1 run that tied the decisive set at 14. Moyer was right in the middle of action as the freshman secured five straight Spartan points as York took a 16-15 lead. The Tartans tied the game at 16 before a CMU error gave the Spartans a 17-16 lead. The visitors tied the match at 17 before a pair of Tartan attack errors gave the Spartans the breathtaking win.

The Spartans looked great in each of the first two sets as they raced out to large leads before cruising to the 2-0 advantage.

Much like in the day's opening match against Johns Hopkins, the Spartans squandered the third set as the Tartans took advantage of some York errors and outstanding play from their tall front line to take the third set.

Carnegie Mellon came out on fire in the fourth set and took the play to the Green and White, forcing the fifth set. That set the stage for the amazing fifth set as the York win streak is the longest in over 10 seasons.

Moyer was simply fantastic as the freshman had a career-high 20 kills as she hit .366 for the match. She also had five digs and a block assist. Junior Julie Coombs added 13 kills and six digs for the Green and White.

The dynamic defensive duo of libero Ashley Rineman and defensive specialist Jana Arentz both played well for York. Rineman collected 28 digs while Arentz notched 14 digs of her own.

Junior Heather Bucher continued her outstanding season as the outside hitter had 11 kills, 21 digs, a solo block, a service ace and one assist. Junior setter Cortni Rentzel distributed 62 assists while she also had 15 digs and a service ace. Senior middle hitters Alishia Waltermyer and Alysse Beshore each contributed 11 kills to the Spartan attack.

The Spartans continue the tournament on Saturday at noon as they host Rutgers-Camden in their third and final pool play match. York will play again at 4:00 pm in either the championship match or the third place match depending on their results at noon.
