Box Score 2 ASTON, PA – The York College volleyball team captured
their second consecutive in-season tournament championship with a
four-match sweep of the 2010 Neumann University Knights
Invitational on Saturday. The Spartans have now won 11 straight as
they swept the weekend and in the processes dropped only two sets
in four matches. York improves to 12-1 overall.
The Spartans began the day with a win over host Neumann 3-1 in
their final pool play match of the tournament. The Spartans won the
match 25-15, 25-18, 23-25, and 25-16. The Green and White concluded
the weekend with a 23-25, 25-6, 25-14, 25-23 win over Widener in
the tournament championship match.
In the opener, the Spartans were led by the dynamic duo of
Alysse
Beshore and Alishia
Waltermyer as the senior middle hitters were fantastic
in the win. Beshore had 13 kills, three block assists and seven
digs in the win. Waltermyer registered 12 kills, a trio of block
assists and a solo block to help power the Spartans to their tenth
straight win. Freshman Jessica
Moyer played three sets in the match as she recorded
nine kills, hit .368 for the match, and also had three block
assists and three digs.
Sophomore libero Ashley
Rineman continued her outstanding defensive efforts
with a match-high 24 digs in the victory. Junior setter Cortni
Rentzel handed out 45 assists while she also collected
15 digs for the double-double.
In the championship match, Waltermyer powered the Spartans with
16 kills and a .560 attack percentage. She also had a solo block
and a block assist. Beshore added 14 kills but had an
uncharacteristic six errors. She also had three block assists and
one solo block.
Rineman led York's defensive effort with 34 digs as she capped a
weekend in which she was named the Tournament's Most Valuable
Player. Rentzel distributed 34 assists to 14 digs and a service ace
for York. Junior Heather
Bucher contributed 12 digs, eight assists, and five
kills for the Green and White. Junior Julie
Coombs was the fourth Spartan in double figures in
digs with 10 while she also had five kills and one service ace.
In addition to Rineman's MVP award, Beshore earned
All-Tournament team honors.
The Spartans are now off until Friday, September 24 when they
host the 2010 Spartan Invitational at Charles Wolf Gymnasium. The
Spartans open the eight-team tournament on Friday night at 5:00 pm
when they host the Blue Jays from Johns Hopkins.
