Box Score YORK, Pa. - When the sun set on the turf of
Kinsley Field and the buzzer sounded, the York College Field Hockey
squad battled back from a two score deficit only to stand
victorious.
A 3-2 victory over visiting Susquehanna University Tuesday
pulled the Green and White to the .500 mark sitting with a 3-3
record, while the Crusaders fell to 3-2.
The Spartans began the afternoon a step behind the Crusaders
allowing the first tally of the contest 13:30 into the first half.
Susquehanna's Heather Moore fired a one-timer off of a rebound,
finding the back of York's goal.
Susquehanna would not let off of the throttle, adding to their
advantage with another score in the 25th minute of play.
Rebecca Entwistle found an open Moore and the junior buried her
second goal of the contest finding the left side of the cage.
Head Coach Jamie Swartz would call for a much needed time-out to
rally the troops. Swartz felt the team needed to pick up their
intensity and let the team know it.
"They needed to shake it off. We were reacting and not being
proactive, and not playing our game," Swartz said. "I wanted to let
them know that I know they can come back and win, but they need to
come out and set the tone, set the intensity, and this is their
chance to build their team game together."
York came off of the timeout and quickly rattle off a goal just
over a minute later to pull the game back to within one score. Casey Lawrence
inserted a corner to junior Colleen
O'Rourke who was able to fire off a shot. Lawrence, a Spartan
senior, redirected the shot from her position on the right post
into the goal for her second tally of the season.
"I just wanted to get our momentum going and it honestly starts
with everyone on our team," Lawrence later commented. "All of our
teammates had a part in getting that goal.
Less than five minutes later the Green and White would record
the equalizer. With 4:26 remaining in the first half, senior Katie Dawkins
found Brittany
Simmons to her left for the goal.
Yet the Spartans were not satisfied with carrying just a tie
game into the half. Jillian Brezgel
fired a shot off of the Susquehanna goalkeeper. Lawrence was in
position for the put-back attempt and was able to rattle off the
game-winner, her second goal of the contest, 31:09 into the
game.
"We wanted to come back and prove to everyone that even if we go
down 2-0, we can still come back and win the game," Lawrence
said.
Susquehanna and York traded multiple possessions in the second
half but neither team was able to add to the score. A stout team
effort by the Spartan defense kept the Crusaders from making a
serious attempt on the net.
"I'm satisfied with the result," Swartz noted. "We obviously
need to work on our opening act and not thrive on the come-from-
behind kind of anxiety, but I think the team pulled it together and
played like a team."
The victory marked the fourth Spartan victory in the last five
years over the Crusaders.
York returns to action on Thursday, September 16 at Neumann
College. The contest is set for a 7:00 p.m. start and is the
Spartans first trip to the Glen Mills, Pa. facility.
