Box Score 2 CARLISLE, PA – The York College volleyball squad captured
the championship of the Dickinson College Invitational as they
swept their two Saturday matches to complete a perfect 4-0 weekend.
The Spartans defeated the host Dickinson Red Devils 3-2 in the
opener on Saturday morning. York then completed the day with a 3-0
romp over Bridgewater in their afternoon match.
The Spartans, winners of six straight, improve to 7-1 overall.
The in-season tournament title is the Spartans' first since
October 2007 when the Green and White captured the title of the
Susquehanna Hampton Inns Tournament in Selinsgrove, PA.
York had to work hard in the match against Dickinson as the
winless Red Devils extended the Spartans to five sets. York won the
match by scores of 25-14, 18-25, 25-23, 24-26, and 15-5.
Sophomore Dani Mastroieni paced the Green and
White attack with a career-high 13 kills in 30 attempts as she hit
.300 for the match. She added six digs and a service ace in the
victory. Senior Alishia Waltermyer contributed 12
kills in a mere 20 attempts, recording a .500 attack percentage for
York. She also had two solo blocks for York. Senior Alysse Beshore was the third Spartan in double figures with kills
as she recorded 11.
Junior setter Cortni Rentzel handed out 49
assists while she also had seven digs. Junior Heather Bucher had another all-around outstanding game with eight
kills, 13 digs, two assists, two service aces and a block assist.
Defensive whiz Ashley Rineman paced the
Spartans' defensive effort with 25 digs while she also served
up a match-high six aces. Junior Julie Coombs
contributed 18 digs and seven kills to the Spartan effort.
The Spartans' then cruised in the nightcap, downing the
Eagles 25-16, 25-20, and 25-22 to cap the perfect weekend. Beshore
and Coombs combined to lead the York offense as they each notched
11 kills. Coombs also tied Rineman for team-high honors in digs as
they each collected 16. Bucher chipped in with six kills, 12 digs,
four assists, a service ace, and one block assist.
Rentzel recorded 33 assists in addition to three kills and nine
digs.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they
travel to Hood to face the Blazers in the team's Capital
Athletic Conference opener. The match is slated for a 7:00 pm
start.
