Box Score 2 CARLISLE, PA - The York College volleyball squad had a
very successful first day at the Dickinson College Invitational as
the Spartans swept a pair of previously unbeaten teams en route to
two victories on Friday.
The Spartans opened the day with a with a 3-1 victory over
Elizabethtown College. The win avenges the Spartans? early season
loss to Elizabethtown last Saturday as they won the match by scores
of 25-14, 25-27, 27-25, and 25-13.
They concluded the day with a 3-1 win over a 6-0 Lebanon Valley
squad. The Spartans won the match 25-20, 29-27, 18-25, and 25-20.
The Spartans are now 5-1 for 2010.
In the win over the Blue Jays, the Spartans had their best
offensive match of the year as they hit a blistering .325 for the
match. Junior Julie Coombs led the way as she
banged out 19 kills with just two errors in 37 attempts for a .459
attack percentage. Coombs also had 11 digs for the Spartans. Fellow
junior Heather Bucher added a season-high 16 kills
as she hit .389 in the win. Bucher also had 13 digs, seven assists,
and two service aces.
Junior setter Cortni Rentzel handed out 55
assists while she also had 16 digs and two block assists. Sophomore
libero Ashley Rineman had 30 digs as she continued
to play outstanding defense for York. Freshman Jessica Moyer contributed 11 kills and three block assists while
Alysse Beshore was the fourth Spartan in double
figures in kills as she had 10 kills in addition to notching five
digs and five block assists. Senior Jana Arentz
was the fifth Spartan to reach double figures in digs as she
contributed 11 off the bench to aid York?s defensive effort.
In the victory against LVC, Coombs was again outstanding as she
banged out 18 kills with just one error as she hit .405 for the
match. Bucher also played well in the match as she notched 13 kills
to go along with 11 digs, three service aces, a solo block and six
block assists. Beshore was the third Spartan in double figures with
10 kills and just one error as she hit .391 for the match.
Rentzel again powered the offense with 47 assists while she was
also outstanding on defense with 25 digs. Rineman continues to be
one of the best defensive players in the region as the sophomore
recorded 32 digs for the Green and White. Senior
Alishia Waltermyer added eight kills, six block
assists and a solo block in the win for York.
The Spartans continue the tournament on Saturday as they face
the host Red Devils at 10:00 am followed by a contest against
Bridgewater (Va.) at 2:00 pm.
