HILTON HEAD, SC – The York College men's tennis
squad picked up a pair of victories Wednesday, besting St. John
Fisher and Grand Rapids Community College by 8-1 and 7-2 scores,
respectively, while on their spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C.
With the pair of triumphs, the Spartans improve to 2-1 on the young
season.
Against Fisher, the Green and White nabbed five of the six singles
slots while sweeping the trio of doubles matches. Senior
Paul Graci (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) notched
the win in first singles as he bested Matt Aquino in straight sets,
6-1, 6-1.
Steve Collison (Westville, N.J./Woodbury) ran
away with the victory in the #2 spot, topping Tim Adler 6-0, 6-1.
Colin Jones (Felton, Pa./Red Lion) and
Travis Klein (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain
East), players who have made solid strides over their
previous Spartans campaigns, secured the third and four slots in
straight sets.
Sophomore Ryan Harvey (Fallston, Md./Fallston)
took sixth singles with a 6-1, 6-1 result over Daniel Parshall.
York captured each of the doubles matches in commanding fashion.
Graci and Collison teamed up for an 8-1 victory in first doubles
while Jones and Klein posted a second doubles win, 8-2. Harvey and
Justin Hostetter (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford
Area) added a third doubles win to the Spartan total,
shutting out Gregory Duffy and Tom Quinzi by an 8-0 count.
The Green and White posted another tally to their 2010 win column
against Grand Rapids. Collison battled to a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-8
three set triumph over Cullen Malloy at #2 singles.
York would also grab the four through six slots. Just as Collison
did, Klein needed three sets to top Keaton Briggs, capturing the
victory via 3-6, 6-1, 10-3 scores. Hostetter and Harvey garnered
triumphs in fifth and sixth singles each in straight sets.
In doubles, the Spartans once again swept each of the three spots,
but were tested. Graci and Collison nabbed an 8-4 win, Jones and
Klein picked up an 8-5 decision, and Harvey and Hostetter secured
an 8-6 victory.
The Green and White face Augustana on Thursday, March 4, as they
continue their Hilton Head trip.
