STEVENSON, MD –The York College men's basketball team put a
disappointing loss to Mary Washington in the rear view mirror as
they downed Stevenson University 87-67 in Capital Athletic
Conference action on Wednesday night in Stevenson, Md.
The Spartans improve to 18-5 overall and 10-4
in the CAC as they clinch a top four spot in the upcoming CAC
Tournament. The Spartans are still in contention for a top two seed
and a bye in the first round of the tournament. The Mustangs fall
to 2-22 overall and 2-13 in the CAC.
York seized control early as they scored the
first bucket of the game and would never trail. The Spartans pushed
their early lead to 11 at 21-10 just under ten minutes into the
game. The Spartans increased the lead to 17 twice in the first half
with the second time coming on a Nick Brady (Hanover,
Pa./Delone Catholic) jumper with 4:34 left in the half.
The Mustangs then hit York with a 13-2 run to trim the Spartan lead
to six at 41-35. The Spartans ended the half with an 8-0 run
including a Kevin Whaley (Dover, Pa./Dover) three
at the horn, giving York a 49-35 lead at the break.
York continued to control the game as they
increased the lead to 20 just under five minutes into the second
half, opening the stanza on an 11-5 run. Stevenson never got within
19 points the rest of the way as York's lead reached as many
as 26 during the second half.
York was led by Whaley as the junior guard
poured in a game-high 22 points. He was an extremely efficient
7-for-10 from the floor, 2-for-4 from three and 6-for-7 from the
charity stripe. He added three steals in his 32 minutes of action.
Sophomore Paul Kouvaris (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal
Gibbons) playing near his hometown of Baltimore, recorded
a double-double with 19 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. He also
had three assists without a turnover in 31 minutes of play. Brady
was the third Spartan in double figures with 17 points while he
also corralled eight caroms.
Danny Murphy led the Mustangs with a
double-double of his own as he posted 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Murphy also had five blocked shots in the loss. Andrew Bishop and
Patrick Lewis each chipped in with 11 points while Bishop pulled
down nine rebounds. Clifton Jones added 10 points and five boards
for the hosts.
York shot a crisp 52.9% in the first half and
finished the game converting 47.1% of their shots from the field.
York struggled a little bit from three (26.3%) and the free throw
line (66.7%) but played a solid defensive game as they held
Stevenson to 37.3% shooting from the floor.
The Mustangs outrebounded the Spartans 46-42
while both teams had 36 paint points in the game. The Spartans did
force 21 Mustang turnovers, which the Green and White turned into
28 points.
York concludes their regular season with a
weekend road trip. They begin that trip with a big game against
nationally ranked St. Mary's on Saturday at 4:00 pm followed
by a contest at Gallaudet on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
