FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The York College
volleyball squad suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of
the University of Mary Washington Tuesday evening in a Capital
Athletic Conference tilt. With the loss, the Spartans fall to 10-6
on the year (2-2 CAC) while the Eagles move to 12-4 (2-1 CAC).
The talented Eagles, who sport five players who are 5'10" and
above, topped their guests in four games. The hosts took the match
in four courtesy of 25-20, 25-15, 27-25, and 25-17 games.
The Spartans did own a 10-3 advantage in the first set before
Mary Washington stormed back to the take the first frame. Following
a second set loss, the York squad held a 23-19 lead
before they bested the Eagles in extra points 27-25. The fourth
stanza proved all Mary Washington as the hosts finished the match
with an eight-point fourth-frame margin.
For the Green and White, Julie Coombs (Leonardtown,
Md./Leonardtown) paced the squad offensively as she
continues to have a solid sophomore campaign. Coombs posted a
team-best 12 kills on the evening while contributing eleven
digs and a pair of block-assist.
Senior Jackie Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill
East) joined Coombs in the double-digit ranks as she
notched ten kills to her credit. Davis hit .600 for the match as
she converted on 15 of her attempts. Alishia Waltermyer
(Brogue, Pa./Red Lion), who currently sits atop the
Spartan leaderboard with 148 kills, added seven kills against Mary
Washington.
Sophomore Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf,
Pa./Northeastern) continues to grow into her role in
her first season as York's full-time setter. She dished out 39
assists in the loss to the Eagles and now sports 517 helpers for
the year.
Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone
Catholic) led the Spartan defensive effort with 20
digs while Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle)
contributed 13.
The Spartans, who had rattled off five-straight victories before
their current two-game losing streak, will look to get back into
the win column next Wednesday. With the weekend off from
competition, the Green and White will now prepare for CAC foe
Gallaudet. York hosts the Bison in a 7:00 pm
contest on October 7 at the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness
Center.
