YORK, PA – The York College women's volleyball squad
posted a pair of wins during day one of the Spartan Best Western
Westgate Invitational in York. The Spartans defeated Moravian
College 3-1 in the opener and completed the sweep with a 3-0 win
over Rowan in the nightcap. The Spartans have now won four straight
as they improve to 9-4 overall.
The Spartans won the match by the scores of
25-22, 25-14, 21-25, and 25-13. The Green and White were led by the
talented tandem of Alysse Beshore (York,
Pa./Northeastern) and Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue,
Pa./Red Lion). Beshore banged out 15 kills with three
service aces and a solo block for a team-best 19 points. Beshore
also continued her torrid hitting percentage as she hit .435 for
the match. It is the eighth time in 12 matches that she has been
over the .400 mark for a match as she is hitting .383 for the
season. Waltermyer added 12 kills, a service ace and two block
assists for 14 points. Sophomore Julie Coombs (Leonardtown,
Md./Leonardtown) was the third Spartan to reach double
figures as she had eight kills and two aces for 10 points. Coombs
also had 11 digs for the Green and White defense. Freshman
Ashley Rineman (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic)
paced York's defensive effort with 14 digs while she also had
a pair of service aces. Setter Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf,
Pa./Northeastern) notched the double-double with 44
assists and 12 digs while she also contributed four of the
Spartans' 12 service aces.
The Spartans rolled past Rowan 25-17, 25-19,
25-18 in the final match of the night. Sophomore Heather
Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) led the Spartans with 12
kills, six digs, and four block assists for 14 points. Beshore
notched seven kills and five block assists while Waltermyer had
eight kills with just one error in 24 attempts in addition to a
block assist. Rentzel handed out 42 assists to go along with nine
digs and a service ace. Rineman once again led the defense with 26
digs as she was the only Spartan in double figures in that
category. Coombs added eight kills and eight digs while senior
Jaclyn Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East)
contributed five kills in ten attempts in just one set played.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday for
day two of the tournament. The Green and White faces Messiah at
12:00 pm followed by a date with Lebanon Valley at 2:00 pm. York,
Messiah and Lebanon Valley each made it through day one with
perfect 2-0 marks.
