YORK,
PA – On a brisk mid-September evening, the York
College field hockey squad was handed a tough 4-1 defeat by
visiting Juniata Thursday at Kinsley Field. The loss drops the
Spartans' 2009 mark to 2-4 while the Eagles improve to 4-2 on
the season.
The Eagles posted the game's first score
late in the first half. With just over three minutes remaining,
Juniata was awarded a penalty corner, inserted by sophomore forward
Kim Amrod. Amrod found Jill McNeish at the top of the circle who
settled the service and rifled a shot toward the Spartan cage. Kara
Buda proved to be in the right place at the right time as she
deflected McNeish's attempt into the right side of
York's goal to open up the scoring.
Juniata extended their advantage to two early
in the second frame. Following another Amrod
penalty corner, the Eagles rifled several attempts on the Spartan
cage, the fourth of which found paydirt. The resulting rebounds
from the first three shots resulted in a scrum in front of the net,
which allowed Shauna Deschenes to poke in Juniata's second of
the game with 33:01 to play.
The visitor's wasted little time in
pushing their lead to 3-0 only 1:59 later. Paula Price hit a shot
that squeezed through the Spartan defense for her fourth goal of
the 2009 campaign.
Juniata continued to pour on the pressure,
notching their fourth in the game's 46th minute.
Following a stellar save from Spartan goalkeeper Claire
Rekitzke (Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior), the Eagles'
Caroline Phillips finished the loose ball as it bounced around in
front of York's goal.
Throughout the remaining minutes of play, the
Green and White seemed to come to life, as they spent a majority of
time in Juniata's half of the field. During that period,
Heather Re (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown)
notched the Spartans lone tally of the match courtesy of a
Casey Lawrence (Abbottstown, Pa./Delone Catholic)
assist in the game's 63rd minute. Lawrence sent
the ball into Re along the left side of the Eagle goal, allowing Re
to whirl and shoot in one motion to score her first of 2009.
For the match, Juniata bested the home squad
in shots 16-10, while York captured a slight 12-10 edge in penalty
corners.
Denalyn Spratt secures the victory in goal for
the Eagles as she made a trio of saves over her 70 minutes of
action. Rekitzke recorded six stops for the Green and White.
York returns to the field on Tuesday,
September 22, when they hit the road to take on Goucher in a 7:00
pm non-conference contest.
