SELINSGROVE,
PA – The York College field hockey team used four
goals from four different players Tuesday afternoon to down host
Susquehanna 4-2 in non-conference action. With the victory the
Spartans up their season mark to 2-3 while the Crusaders drop to
2-4.
The Spartans opened up the scoring in the
17th minute when Brittany Simmons (Leola,
Pa./Conestoga Valley) buried an Allison Roush
(Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) pass to give York an
early 1-0 advantage. Junior Casey Lawrence (Abbottstown,
Pa./Delone Catholic) inserted a penalty corner that Roush
centered to Simmons, which the sophomore finished for her first
collegiate goal.
York's lead quickly evaporated though,
as the Crusaders tied the game just over a minute later. Andrea
Fiori got to a loose ball in front of the Spartan cage that she
poked across the line to knot the score at one.
Despite the setback, the Spartans responded in
earnest, tallying their next goal shortly after. Roush knocked an
attempt on the Crusader goal but was thwarted by an Erin Ferguson
save. The ensuing rebound however found the stick of freshman
forward Sandee Reich (Pitman, N.J./Glassboro) who
wasted little time in securing the second goal of her young career.
The Green and White would fire off nine more
shots in the frame, eight of which were saved by Ferguson, but were
unable to add to their slight lead.
At the half, the Spartans held a huge 14-3
advantage in shots as well as a 6-2 margin in penalty corners.
As a new stanza commenced, the Crusaders
deadlocked the score once again on an Anna Spisak tally just 3:13
into the second frame.
York's Megan Spangler
(Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) nearly put York up
by one once more in the 44th minute but a defensive save
by Susquehanna's Laurel Monaghan kept the scoreboard showing
a 2-2 contest.
Spangler would record her tally in the
54th minute, knocking home what would prove to be the
game-winner. A Lawrence corner found Spangler who finished for her
first notch of 2009.
Up one, the Spartan defense did not allow
another Crusader shot throughout the final 16 minutes of play.
The Green and White would add to their lead
with 7:34 left on the clock on Katie Dawkins'
(Easton, Md./Easton) team-leading fifth goal of the
season. Dawkins ripped her initial shot, which was stopped by
Ferguson, but then recorded the tally on the resulting rebound.
For the game, the York squad held a 21-8 bulge
in shots to go along with a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Senior netminder Claire Rekitzke
(Seaford, Del./Seaford Senior) notches her second victory
of the season making four saves over her 70 minutes. Ferguson
played an exceptional match between the pipes as she kept her squad
in the game throughout posting 13 stops.
The Green and White return home on Thursday,
September 17, as they face Juniata in a 5:00 pm non-conference
tilt.
