YORK, Pa. – The York
College volleyball team opened the 2009 campaign with a hard-fought
3-1 victory over the visiting Messiah College Falcons Tuesday
evening. Despite dropping the first set, the Spartans posted a four
set 23-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-17 in their season opener at Charles
Wolf Gymnasium.
Not only were the Spartans able to start the
season in the win column, but with that triumph head coach
Sue DuMars recorded her 250th career
victory at York College. After winning 19 games last season, the
Green and White are off to a solid start to start to their fall
schedule.
Although York failed to gain early rhythm in
their opener, during the third set the Spartans were able to find
their groove. After being tied 11-11, York rallied for ten
consecutive points, the longest streak of the match, to gain the
momentum they carried throughout the remainder of play.
The fourth set saw the Spartans post short
rallies throughout the game, highlighted by sophomore Julie
Coombs (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown). The outside hitter
recorded numerous blocks and kills during the set to help solidify
York's victory.
The Spartans were led by Coombs and fellow
sophomore Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle)
who each posted stellar outings. Coombs finished the day with 11
kills and 11 digs while Bucher finished with six kills and four
service aces, two of which came at the conclusion of set three.
Cortni Renzel (Mt. Wolf,
Pa./Northeastern) and Ashley Rineman (Hanover,
Pa./Delone Catholic) also contributed significantly to the
victory. Rentzel began her sophomore campaign by commanding the
middle, dishing out 34 of York's 41 assists. Rineman posted
tremendous games in sets three and four as her sprawling digs kept
numerous points alive and energized the Spartan side. She finished
the day with a team-high 12 digs.
The Spartans will now travel to Elizabethtown
on Saturday, September 5 where they will compete in a tri-meet. The
Spartans are scheduled to take on Elizabethtown at noon and
McDaniel at 2:00 p.m.
