YORK,
PA - The York College wrestling squad ended the
first semester portion of the their schedule with two wins in three
matches at Saturday's York College Quad Meet at the
Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center in York. The Spartans
defeated PSU-DuBois 33-16 and Muhlenberg 42-4 before falling to
nationally ranked Wilkes University 34-6 as the Spartans now stand
at 5-8 for the campaign.
The day began with a win from Aaron
Repman (Hanover, Pa./South Western) at 125 pounds against
PSU DuBois. Teammate Alex Paladino (Magnolia, Del./Caesar
Rodney) put the Spartans up 6-0 with a 14-7 win at 133
pounds. The Lions captured the next three weight classes to take a
16-6 lead through 157 pounds. The Spartans responded with a
Matt Heisey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cedar Crest) tech
fall at 165 pounds and a Paul Richards (Hermon,
Maine/Hermon) major decision, bringing York to within one
point at 16-15. York then rolled off three straight pin fall
victories starting with Alex Martocello (Miller Place,
N.Y./Miller Place) putting Steve Terwilliger on his back
at the 2:36 mark in the 184-pound bout. John Starcevich
(Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) then won by fall in
a time of 2:13 followed by a Shane Cooley (Wrightsville,
Pa./Eastern York) heavyweight win with a pin fall victory
at the 6:33 mark.
Against Muhlenberg, Spartan head coach
Tom Kessler got some experience for some of his
reserves. After a Jerrid Hartman (Red Lion, Pa./Red
Lion) got a forfeit win at 125, sophomore Shaun
Wagner (Dover, Pa./Northeastern) picked up a 3-1 win at
133. The Mules got a win at 141 but Evan Ennis
(Jarrettsville, Md./Calvert Hall) recorded a tight 5-4 win
at 149 to increase the Spartan lead to 12-4. Ryan Milbourn
(Carrollton, Va./Smithfield) posted a major decision win
for the Spartans at 157 and was followed by Heisey notching his
second win of the day with an 8-2 win over Keith Swanson.
Zach Downing (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill)
continued the Spartan express rolling with a tech fall at 174
followed by a John Page (Germantown,
Md./Northwest) major decision at 184. Starcevich won by
forfeit at 197 and Tom Fitzpatrick (LaPlata,
Md./LaPlata) closed out the match with a heavyweight pin.
The match against #18 Wilkes started well for
the Spartans. Hartman notched his second win of
the day as he edged Scott Mantua 5-4 in the 125-pound bout. The
Colonels opened up a lead with a pin fall win at 133 and a major
decision at 141. The Spartans then had a trio of close losses in
tight matches at 149, 157, and 165 before Frank Heffernan earned a
pin fall win at 174 for the Colonels, pushing the lead to 25-3.
Martocello earned his second win of the day with a 7-5 win over
Jesse Villella at 184 before Wilkes won the final two weight
classes to close out the match.
The Spartans are now off until January 9 when
they travel to the North/South Duals at Ursinus College. The action
is slated for a 10:00 am start.
