YORK, PA - After a late match surge the York
College wrestling team (0-3) failed to conjure up a comeback,
falling to McDaniel College (1-0) by a score of 22-19. The match
began with both sides trading points with the Spartans ultimately
finding themselves in a hole after the light-weight matches. The
Green and White then rattled off a major decision to tie the match
and a decision to take a three point lead into the final match
before being denied by the Green Terror.
The first match of the night for the Spartans was the 125-pound
bout between York's Aaron Repman (Hanover, Pa./South
Western) and McDaniel's Earl Eppard. After an up and
down match through the first two periods Repman was able to pull
Eppard to his back for two quick back points. With under a minute
remaining in the match Repman again garnered control and forced
Eppard to his back gaining three ensuing points to end in a 9-7
victory for Repman (1-2) and a Spartan 3-0 opening match lead.
Tommy Goretsas dominated the beginning of the 133-pound bout
against Shaun Wagner (Dover, Pa./ Northeastern).
Goretsas caught Wagner reaching for his back leg on multiple
occasions, which resulted in an early 6-1 lead only a minute into
the match. Wagner (1-3) chose the bottom position after the
decision was deferred to York, following a close attempt at a
switch Wagner found himself in an 11-2 hole at the end of the
second period. Wagner began the third period with a quick escape
and went back to work in an attempt to close the gap on an
eight-point deficit. Goretsas thwarted many attempts by Wagner,
including a swift attempt at a double leg takedown and Goretsas
went on to score a major decision, giving McDaniel a 4-3 match
lead.
In the 141 pound match, the Green and White's
Chris Gugliotti (Swoyersville, Pa./ Pittston Area)
faced the Green Terror's Mike Tancredi. Tancredi scored on a
takedown and Gugliotti fought hard to regain control through the
first period but could not manage to score any points. Down 2-0
through the first two periods, the Spartan freshmen chose the
bottom position in hopes of scoring a two-point reversal to tie the
match. Gugliotti (1-3) was able to score a one-point escape.
Tancredi was then called a second time for stalling and Gugliotti
was awarded the tying point. The bout ended in a tie by points,
however Tancredi was awarded the win with a better ride time for
the match.
The Green Terror continued their win streak by scoring a :32
second pin in the 149 pound match between York's Evan
Ennis (Jarrettsville, Md./ Calvert Hall) and
McDaniel's Brent Lowe. Lowe caught Ennis (1-3) reaching
behind in the early going of the match and took him to his back.
The takedown was quickly transferred into a half nelson and a pin
for the Green Terror bolstering them to a 13-3 lead.
The Spartans got back in the win column behind the work of
freshman Alan Dyer (Laurel Springs, N.J./ Camden
Catholic) in the 157-pound skirmish. Dyer (1-2) got out to
an early lead with a one-legged take down, and began to work the
arm bar from the top position. The Spartan locked in the arm bar
for two back points. Entering the final period and holding onto a
two-point lead, Dyer quickly scored a takedown to stretch the lead
back to four points at 6-2, Peters earned an escape and the match
ended by a 6-3 score pulling McDaniel's lead back to seven
points for the match.
The Spartans continued to rally behind sophomore Matt
Heisey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cedar Crest) in his 165-pound
battle against the Green Terror's Marcus Carter. An
early takedown earned Heisey (1-2) a 2-0 lead. Heisey had Carter on
his back early, quickly scoring the pin at 1:44 to earn six points
for the Spartans in the process pulling the margin to one at 13-12.
The 174-pound match turned out to be a standing battle through
the first period with neither of the two competitors giving in to
one another's attempts at a takedown. York's
Paul Richards (Hermon, Maine/ Hermon) began the
second period on the bottom, underneath McDaniel's Scott
Forrester. Richards jumped out front scoring on a smooth escape to
gain the one point advantage in the bout. Later in the period,
Richards found himself entangled in the opponent and was taken
down, but was able to escape to force a 2-2 tie going into the
final period. Richards could not hold Forrester on the bottom in
the final period with the McDaniel's product scoring a 5-2
victory, earning a takedown in the final minute. The win
extended the McDaniel lead to four by a score of 16-12.
The 184-pound match between the Green and White's
Alex Martocello (Miller Place, N.Y./ Miller Place)
and the Green Terror's Will Yeo began with a scoreless first
period. Martocello (1-2) started the second period on top, however
Yeo was awarded a point for a locked hands violation on the Spartan
sophomore. Martocello regained the lead after being awarded three
back points and was able to retrieve five more back points. A
takedown in the closing seconds of the match earned Martocello a
major decision by a score of 11-2, pulling the Spartans even with
two matches remaining.
In the second to last bout of the night, 197 pounders
George Saliba (Pennigton, N.J./ Hopewell Valley
Central), a Spartan product, took on McDaniel's Joe
Camlin. Saliba (1-2) scored on an early second period escape,
following another scoreless first half. The Spartan sophomore
scored two points on a takedown to carry a 4-1 lead into the third
and final period. The bout ended in a Spartan victory by a score of
6-2, giving the Green and White a three-point advantage entering
the final bout of the night.
That is when the 285-pound big men took the floor with the match
on the line. For the Spartans Tom Fitzpatrick (LaPlata,
Md./ LaPlata) squared off against McDaniel's Brock
Glotfelty. Glotfelty, who garnered All-American honors last season,
earned the first points of the match by taking down Fitzpatrick
early in the first period, the Spartan senior was unable to
recover and was forced on his back for the pin as McDaniel captured
the 22-19 match victory.
The loss hands the Spartans to their fifth straight defeat, with
their last team victory coming against Hunter on February 7, 2009.
The Green and White will look to get into the win column with a
return to the mat on Saturday, November 14, for the John Reese
Duals in Wilkes Barre, Pa. Starting at 11:00 am the Spartans will
face Mt. St. Joe's, Scranton, New York University, and Ithaca.
