SELINSGROVE, PA – The York College volleyball squad split
their two matches during the opening day of the Fourth Annual
Hampton Inn Crusader Classic hosted by Susquehanna University in
Selinsgrove, PA. The Spartans defeated Montclair State 3-0 in the
opener before falling to the host Susquehanna Crusaders 3-0 in the
nightcap. With the split, the Spartans now stand at 11-8 overall.
The Spartans defeated the Redhawks 25-15,
26-24, 25-10 to snap a three-match losing streak. Junior
Alysse Beshore (York, Pa./Northeastern) led the
Green and White with 12 points on five kills, one solo block, six
block assists, three service aces, and a pair of digs. Fellow
junior Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion)
added 11 points on nine kills and two service aces. Waltermyer hit
a team-high .381 in the match. Sophomore Cortni Rentzel
(Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) handed out 23 assists in two
sets while she also notched nine digs. Fellow sophomore
Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) chipped in
with six kills, seven digs, a service ace and a pair of block
assists for eight points. Ashley Rineman (Hanover,
Pa./Delone Catholic) and Julie Coombs
(Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) paced the York defense with
10 digs each.
Against Susquehanna, the Spartans fell 25-17,
25-22, and 25-19. Waltermyer and Jaci Davis (Cherry Hill,
N.J./Cherry Hill East) each recorded 12.5 points in the
loss. Waltermyer had 12 kills with one error and a block assist
while Davis had 12 kills, hit .524 and also had a block assist.
Waltermyer and Davis combined to post 24 of York's 38 kills
in the match. Beshore contributed eight kills and two block assists
for nine points while Rentzel handed out 33 assists and also had
three digs. Rineman led the Green and White defensive effort with
16 digs while Bucher added 11.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday
afternoon as they face Rowan University at 1:00 pm followed by a
match against Richard Stockton at 3:00 pm during day two of the
tournament.
