BETHLEHEM, PA - The York College volleyball team suffered a pair
of losses Saturday afternoon at the Moravian tri-meet in the final
day of York's regular season. The Green and White first fell
to the host Greyhounds in four sets (17-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-18)
before dropping a five-set affair to an exceptional Lebanon Valley
squad (25-21, 25-18, 24-26, 15-25, 15-10).
The Spartans, who close out their 2009 regular season slate with
a mark of 17-13 (5-3 CAC) took the first set of day in their match
against Moravian (15-17) by a 25-17 but that would prove York's
lone high mark for their tri-meet opener.
Junior Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red
Lion) posted a match-high 13 kills on 32 attempts while
Alysse Beshore (York, Pa./Northeastern) registered
eleven. Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf,
Pa./Northeastern) handed out 35 helpers, another
match-best, while posting a trio of service aces.
Defensively, freshman sensation Ashley Rineman (Hanover,
Pa./Delone Catholic) had 18 digs to lead all players while
Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) and
Jana Arentz (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) each kept 12
balls off the floor.
For Moravian, Katie Moquete had seven kills while Mary King
recorded six to go along with nine service aces. Christine Poole's
21 assists paced the Greyhounds as did Ashley Schmidt's 15 digs.
In the latter match, the Spartans stretched a two-loss Lebanon
Valley (29-2) squad to the brink but fell in the fifth set. After
dropping the first two games, York rallied to secure games three
and four, including a 26-24 win in the third set, but LVC outlasted
the Green and White 15-10 in the final frame. The Spartans are now
4-2 in five-set matches this season.
Beshore and Waltermyer traded places statistically against the
Flying Dutchmen as Beshore posted 13 kills while Waltermyer
recorded eleven. Bucher added nine kills of her own, helping
Rentzel's effort in distributing 45 assists.
Rineman again led the Spartans in digs with 23 while Rentzel
posted 17 herself. Bucher and Julie Coombs (Leonardtown,
Md./Leonardtown) also registered double digits in the digs
category with 17 and ten respectively.
The Spartans now focus their attention squarely on the Capital
Athletic Conference Tournament. York opens up the 2009 league
playoffs on November 3 as the Green and White host St. Mary's in a
7:00 p.m. tilt from York's Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.
