YORK, PA – The York College volleyball team celebrated their
2009 Senior Day in fine style with a 3-1 non-conference victory
over former Capital Athletic Conference rival Catholic University
on Thursday night in York. The Spartans won the match 25-21, 21-25,
25-22, 25-19. York improves to 15-8 with the win while the
Cardinals fall to 16-9.
On senior day, it's ironic that the
Spartans received a strong performance from one of their youngest
players as freshman Melissa Patterson (Edgewater, Md./South
River) banged home a match-high 12 kills in addition to a
solo block for 13 points. Patterson hit .381 in one of her best
matches of the year.
Junior Alysse Beshore (York,
Pa./Northeastern) also had a strong night with 16 points
on 11 kills, three service aces, and four block assists. Beshore
also had four digs for the Green and White. Fellow junior
Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) added 10
kills, three solo blocks, one block assist and five digs.
Waltermyer finished with 13.5 points for the match. Sophomore
Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) was the
fourth Spartan in double figures in points with 11.5 on seven
kills, three service aces, and three block assists. Bucher also
notched four assists and 13 digs.
Senior Amanda Rouillard (Woodbine,
Md./Glenelg) earned the start on senior night and
responded with 45 assists, nine digs, and three kills. Fellow
senior Jaci Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill
East) added nine kills and three digs for nine points.
Freshman Ashley Rineman (Hanover,
Pa./Delone Catholic) paced the Spartans' defensive
effort with a match-high 19 digs while she also had two service
aces. Sophomore Julie Coombs (Leonardtown,
Md./Leonardtown) chipped in with 13 digs of her own.
Catholic was led by Lynn Brown as she had a
team-high 13 points. Brown had 10 kills, three solo blocks and five
digs. Katie Chefalas contributed 18 digs, eight kills, and a block
assist for the Cardinals. Michaela Carroll handed out 36 assists
and notched 12 digs for the visitors.
Prior to the contest, Davis, Amanda
Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Rouillard were
recognized for their contributions to the program. The victory over
Catholic was the 86th win in the careers of the three
Spartan seniors.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday
evening when they travel to Marymount University for a Capital
Athletic Conference contest. Game time in Arlington, VA is set for
7:00 pm.
