SELINSGROVE, PA – The York College
volleyball squad captured second place at the 2009 Hampton Inn
Crusader Classic courtesy of a pair of hard-fought victories on
Saturday. The Spartans topped Rowan 3-2 before besting Richard
Stockton in a five-game match to improve their 2009 record to
13-8.
Sophomore standout Alysse Beshore (York,
Pa./Northeastern) was named the tournament's Most Valuable
Player for her outstanding performance during the two-day event.
Over the four matches, Beshore totaled 54 kills on 93 attempts with
only 14 errors. She also posted a stellar 21 block assists, two
solo blocks, and four aces.
On Saturday against the Owls (7-14), the Green and White secured
the victory with games of 25-10, 19-25, 25-9, 18-25, 15-11. Beshore
provided the Spartans with an exceptional match in Saturday's
Spartan opener. She tallied 16 kills with only a trio of errors on
33 attempts while she added seven block assists. Alishia
Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red Lion) also notched
double-digit kills against Rowan recording 13.
Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern),
York's sophomore setter, handed-out 36 assists and
contributed four aces while Jackie Davis (Cherry Hill,
N.J./Cherry Hill East) added nine kills to the
Spartans' offensive effort. Heather Bucher (Carlisle,
Pa./Carlisle) had an all-around quality match with six kills, eight
digs, and four block assists.
Defensively, York was led by freshman Ashley Rineman
(Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) who registered 27 digs and
sophomore Julie Coombs (Leonardtown,
Md./Leonardtown) who posted 15.
The Spartans were stretched to the limit yet again, this time by
Richard Stockton in their final match of the Crusader Classic. York
scratched out the quality win over the now 15-7 Ospreys after being
down two games to one – 18-25, 25-23, 12-25, 25-18, 15-8.
Beshore again paced the Spartan offensively as she recorded 15
kills and a .385 attack percentage. She also added six block
assists and one solo block to aid the Green and White defensively.
Davis added 14 kills in one of her top outputs of the year.
Waltermyer and Bucher each notched eleven kills with Bucher also
contributing nine digs. Melissa Patterson (Edgewater,
Md./South River) registered nine kills, posting an
efficient .438 attack percentage.
Rentzel distributed an incredible 59 assists against Richard
Stockton, increasing her total to 689 helpers on the year. The
sophomore also posted 14 digs to aid the defensive effort.
Rineman again paced the Green and White in digs, recording 19
against the Ospreys.
The Spartans are set to return to the court on Tuesday, October
13, traveling to Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley. Match time
from Dover, Del. is slated for 7:00 pm.
