ALLENTOWN, PA-The York College women's
volleyball dropped both of their matches in the championship
bracket of the 2008 Buttermaker Classic in Allentown, PA. The
Spartans dropped a tough 3-2 loss to the host Mules before falling
3-1 to #17 Stevens. The scores in the Muhlenberg match were 21-25,
25-20, 19-25, 25-22, and 15-7 while the set scores of the Stevens
match were 25-12, 22-25, 25-18, and 25-15.
Against Muhlenberg, the Spartans lost their second five-set match
of the weekend. York came out on fire as they hit .484 in the
opening set. The Spartans followed that up with a second set that
saw them hit .235. York then hit .184 in the third set, -.020 in
the fourth set and .000 in the fifth set as their 2-0 lead slip
away.
For the match, sophomore Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue,
Pa./Red Lion) continued her stellar play for the
tournament as she had 11 kills en route to hitting .409 for the
match. Waltermyer added five block assists and one service ace.
Junior Jaclyn Davis (Cherry Hills, N.J./Cherry Hill
East) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs
while junior Casi Brough (Hanover, Pa./Spring
Grove) also had a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs.
Freshmen Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle)
and Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern)
each added double-doubles in the loss. Bucher had 22 assists, 14
digs, seven kills, one block solo and seven block assists. Rentzel
also had 22 assists while she collected 11 digs. Junior libero
Amanda Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) led the
Spartans' defensive charge as she notched 33 digs.
Against nationally ranked Stevens, the Spartans hit a paltry .037
for the game. Bucher, Brough and Davis led the Spartan offense with
seven kills each. Bucher also had 14 assists and eight digs while
Brough had 10 digs. Clemens again led the defense with 15 digs.
Clemens was selected to the All-Tournament team after her
outstanding weekend. She finished with 101 digs in 17 games for the
weekend.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday evening when they travel
to St. Mary's College to open the Capital Athletic Conference
campaign. Game time in St. Mary's City is set for 7:00
pm.
