ALLENTOWN, PA-The York College women's
volleyball squad split their opening two matches on Friday night at
the Buttermaker Classic hosted by Muhlenberg College in Allentown,
PA. The Spartans dropped a five-set match against DeSales as the
Bulldogs posted a come from behind win, 18-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-18,
15-13. In the nightcap, the green and white bounced back to blank
Susquehanna 3-0. The scores in the second match were 25-22, 25-17,
25-14. The green and white are now 4-1 after the two matches.
In the loss to DeSales, the Spartans controlled the first two sets
of the match. The Spartans substituted and lost the momentum. They
could not regain the momentum as the Bulldogs captured the final
three sets to steal the win from the green and white.
Sophomore Alishia Waltermyer (Brogue, Pa./Red
Lion) led the Spartan offense as she had 18 kills en route
to hitting .310 for the match. Junior Casi Brough (Hanover,
Pa./Spring Grove) notched one of three Spartan
double-doubles as she had 13 kills and 18 digs. Freshmen
Heather Bucher (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) and
Cortni Rentzel (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) also
recorded double-doubles for York. Bucher had 20 assists and 12 digs
while she also contributed two aces and three block assists.
Rentzel added 29 assists and 11 digs to the Spartan cause. Junior
libero Amanda Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest)
continued her outstanding early season play as she recorded 35 digs
in the game. Junior Jaclyn Davis (Cherry Hills, N.J./Cherry
Hill East) was the third Spartan in double figures in
kills with 10 while she also had eight digs.
In the win over Susquehanna, the Spartans played well en route to
the win. York hit .227 for the match, as they were very consistent.
They hit .222 for the first set, .229 for the second set and .231
for the third set.
Waltermyer continued to power the green and white offense with nine
kills and just one error as she hit .444 for the game. Bucher had
16 assists, seven kills, six digs, and one service ace while fellow
freshman Sierra Dell (Glen Rock,
Pa./Susquehannock) added seven kills and five block
assists. Clemens collected another 20 digs while she also had four
service aces. Rentzel handed out 15 assists in addition to five
assists.
The Spartans continue their stay in Allentown on Saturday as they
advance to the championship bracket where they will look to defend
their 2007 Buttermaker Classic title. The Spartans face the host
Mules at 10:00 am followed by a contest against #17 Stevens at
12:00 pm.
